We have just finished another fantastic trial, this time combined with Eagle Heights Sport Dog Club. What an amazing weekend it was, bringing together so many passionate working dog enthusiasts in one location. The level of support, sportsmanship, and camaraderie on display was truly exceptional. From start to finish, competitors and spectators alike demonstrated genuine encouragement, respect, and friendship.

A massive congratulations to every person who competed and to those who achieved certifications. It was inspiring to watch the results of your hard work, dedication, and discipline. The atmosphere throughout the entire weekend was something special—warm, welcoming, generous, and supportive, with everyone working together to make the event a success.

Our Judge, Jim Duncan, was at his very best, as was Apprentice Judge Dane Herbert. Their professionalism, knowledge, and commitment to the sport were greatly appreciated.

A huge thank you also goes to our support and organisational team, who were simply outstanding. The countless hours of work behind the scenes never go unnoticed. Special thanks also to their partners, who willingly joined in and helped wherever needed—without reward, although I suspect they may have been well trained! 😊

The food throughout the weekend was absolutely delicious. A special thank you to Little Italy Italian Restaurant in Kinglake West for keeping everyone well fed. If you are looking for a wonderful place to eat, please pay them a visit.

Something our club has thought about for years.

Dumbbell Stand Etiquette

Implementing a systematic, polished approach to dumbbell stand training demonstrates precision, confidence, and teamwork—essential elements across disciplines.

One area where many handlers struggle is the dumbbell stand. As you heel toward it with your dog, you may find yourself faced with a question:

* Do you keep your dog strictly in heel position and quietly slide past, hoping it doesn't notice what you're doing?
* Do you reach for the dumbbell in an improvised manner, risking confusion or anticipation?
* Or do you adopt a straightforward, systematic approach that appears polished, logical, and intentional?

I recommend the third option. Just like every other element of obedience, how you approach the dumbbell stand is an opportunity to express precision, confidence, and teamwork.

Train it to look deliberate.
Train it to look polished.
Train it to look like you meant it.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this trial such a memorable day.

To all the Melbourne Sport Dog Club competitors – your dedication, sportsmanship, and effort were truly inspiring. To our trial secretary John Appleby and our amazing club secretary Fiona, thank you for the tireless work you do behind the scenes to keep everything running so smoothly – it never goes unnoticed.

A very special thank you to our judge, Phil Triantifilou, for your honesty, fairness, and supportive spirit in your judging – it gave all competitors the chance to truly show their best. To everyone who stepped up to help on the day, we are so grateful for your time, effort, and teamwork. And of course, to those who put together the incredible lunch and coffee – it was nothing short of amazing (and more than a little over the top in the best way!).

It was a day filled with hard work, laughter, camaraderie, and passion for the sport – exactly what makes this community so special. Thank you all and we look forward to seeing you at the next trial.
