These practical sessions are designed for sporting organisations, clubs, coaches, volunteers, parents and participants.

Melbourne Cup Tournament Update 2026

Firstly, thank you to all the players who have reached out with ideas and offers to help—not only with this tournament, but also in support of Victorian polo more broadly.

Our priority has been to ensure the Melbourne Cup Tournament goes ahead, so we can continue using the fields at Werribee and give our players the opportunity to start the season. While we would all
love to see the tournament host higher-goal polo and reclaim the prestige it has enjoyed in past years, our immediate focus is on running the event and keeping polo at Werribee.

A big thank you to James Thomas and Ruki Baillieu, who have been instrumental in rallying teams and players.

In response to the feedback and support we’ve received, the tournament will offer 8-goal and 2-goal grades only. As previously communicated, this decision reflects a number of factors, including the extended NSW calendar, Garangula’s closure and the current distribution of player handicaps within Victoria.

We hope to see Victorian polo continue to strengthen in the seasons ahead. The support shown by members of EPC, Hexham, Yarra Valley and Vallex in helping field teams and kick off the Victorian season is encouraging, and we’re grateful to everyone contributing.

Your 2026 polo membership expires on 30 September 2026. After this date, you will no longer be able to play polo in Australia until your membership has been renewed.

When purchasing your 2027 membership, please allow time to check and update your contact details and ensure all information is current.

Melbourne Polo Cup 2026

The Victorian Polo Association is delighted to invite players, patrons and supporters to the 2026 Melbourne Polo Cup, one of the highlights of the Victorian polo season.
Running from Wednesday 28 October to Sunday 8 November 2026, the tournament brings together ten days of competitive polo across 12 Goal, 6 Goal and 2 Goal grades, culminating in Finals Day at Darriwill Polo Field on Sunday 8 November.

Held during one of Melbourne’s most exciting times of year, the Melbourne Polo Cup coincides with the Spring Racing Carnival and Melbourne Cup, giving visiting players and supporters the opportunity to combine outstanding polo with everything Melbourne has to offer.

Matches will also be hosted at Werribee Park Equestrian Centre and Eynesbury Polo Club, with the full tournament schedule to be released following the close of nominations.
Team nominations are now open and close Wednesday 7 October 2026.

We look forward to welcoming the polo community to Victoria for a memorable Melbourne Polo Cup.

Polo NSW is calling for nominations for this year’s Junior Polo Championships, to be held in the Hawkesbury Basin at Troika on the 7 & 8 October 2026

Players must be 21 years of age or under to participate.

The tournament will feature A & B Grade, with individual nominations being accepted. Teams will then be selected from the nominated players to compete for the prestigious White Family Trophy. 🏆

Those who’ve been around the sport for many years will remember Reg as a familiar and much-loved face at WPNEC, back in the days of week-in, week-out Werribee polo competitions.

Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this very sad time.

Equestrian Victoria are deeply saddened by the news that Reg Cleland OAM has passed away earlier today.

It cannot be overstated the enormous contribution Reg has made to Equestrian sport over many decades. Reg was instrumental in the establishment of the EFA (Equestrian Federation of Australia) and the State Branches back in the early nineties, and also led the original negotiations that secured Werribee Park as the home of Equestrian sport in Victoria, among so many other achievements too numerous to list.

We take this time to reflect on the wonderful life of a man who gave his heart and soul to the sport of Equestrian and dedicated his entire life to the sport in so many ways, and send our love to his wife Fran and all of her family.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED

The Australian Polo Federation Hall of Fame has announced four new inductees.

Mrs Roslyn Packer
Mr Stuart Gilmore
Mr Anto White

Kerry Packer and Roslyn Packer transformed polo globally. The modern sport — its professionalism, its horses, its infrastructure — stands on the foundations they created through Ellerston and the world‑class system that grew from it. Ellerston became the birthplace of modern professional polo, ultimately enabling thousands of careers, driving a thriving international polo pony industry, and setting new standards for fields, horsemanship, and high‑goal play that have been adopted worldwide. Their influence on the sport over the past fifty years is immeasurable.

Stuart Gilmore enjoyed a stellar playing career achieving a handicap of 7 goals. Stuart represented Australia 12 times; won all of Australia’s major tournaments and many international tournaments. He is one of the most celebrated players of the modern era renowned for his ability to always find a way to win.

Anto White’s contribution to the sport has been profound. An Australian captain, Anto achieved a 5 goal handicap winning many major trophies. His influence off-the-field has also been immense especially with the development of junior polo schools; coaching clinics; and umpire and coaching accreditation.

Induction ceremonies will be held with details announced as they are determined.

The four new inductees will join a stable of significant figures in Australian polo history in the Hall of Fame.
