Integration of Body, Breath and Mind

“Mastery in asana cannot be achieved by just controlling the body. Only with control over the breath and the mind will asana be mastered.”

This quote comes from the book Krishnamacharya in His Own Words, as related by AG Mohan and Dr. Ganesh Mohan. Thanks again my friend Kael Coster for gifting me this book – gold nuggets galore! 🙏

Mastery requires three things simultaneously: body, breath and mind. Controlling just one isn't enough because if each one depends on the others, then none of them is the true starting point. And any system where outputs feed back into inputs as new conditions is structurally recursive, that is - each step using the last as its new ground.

Recursion is the nature of the practice containing body, breath and mind. A moment of breath awareness creates a flicker of mental stillness. That stillness allows deeper physical release. That release invites more breath. The mind quiets further. You spiral inward, not linearly but in loops. Each layer enables the next, which deepens the first. Many people approach yoga with a linear model in their head. Effort = output. You practice - you improve. There's a starting line and somewhere ahead of it there is a finish line.

We shouldn't view practice as climbing a ladder with fixed rungs and a top to reach. Rather it’s closer to winding inward where each layer of depth only becomes visible once you've arrived at it, and arriving always reveals more. The spiral has no end, it only winds closer to the truth within.

This means the entry point doesn't matter. You can begin with body, breath, or attention; as long as you understand that all three must eventually be brought together. The asana poses, practiced correctly, are the container for that convergence.

Krishnamacharya was talking to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra 2.47, if anyone wants to explore more.

Ekagrata

Do you ever feel dissipated, overwhelmed, entangled, fragmented? The ancient teachers knew what our modern life increasingly confirms, that the mind left unchecked will scatter in a thousand directions.

Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, the father of modern yoga, taught: "All mental distractions arise from the free play of the senses — and only through continuing practice can one keep their power in check."

Ekagrata = One-pointedness

The essence of yoga is the single-pointed mind, a mind that can rest on a single object, a single thought, or a single feeling, without being pulled away.

Every time you return your attention to the breath, you are training the mind.
Every time you step back on the mat, you are choosing clarity over chaos.
Every time you sit in stillness, you are reclaiming your inner ground.

The yogi who absorbs themself fully with their practice cultivates ekagrata, removing the distractions that prevent the truth from being seen in its singularity. The truth is not out there — it was always within. Seek it out.
