🇮🇹❄️ 6 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙨 | 𝘼 𝙂𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙤-𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙖 2026 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙊𝙡𝙮𝙢𝙥𝙞𝙘𝙨

Get ready for the return of the Olympic Winter Games to Europe, the heart of global Alpine skiing! From February 6 to 22, 2026, Milano Cortina will host this spectacular event, showcasing a stunning expanse of Italy's majestic mountains across 22,000 square kilometers.

An expected 2,900 athletes from over 90 National Olympic Committees will come together to compete in 116 events across eight sports and 16 disciplines. We can feel the excitement of our ice and snow sports athletes and fans from our picturesque Victorian Alps communities!

The Winter Olympics have a rich history, celebrating athletes who push the limits of performance and endurance. As we look forward to this remarkable event, we can appreciate the evolution of the Games that have captivated audiences since their inception.

✨ Among the many athletes competing, we must highlight Australia’s most successful Winter Olympic athlete, Torah Bright! A talented snowboarder from regional NSW (Cooma), Torah made her mark on the world stage with her incredible skills and determination. She won a gold medal in the halfpipe at the 2010 Vancouver Games, along with a silver in Sochi in 2014, making her a true inspiration for aspiring athletes.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 365 𝙙𝙖𝙮𝙨 | 𝙂𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙜𝙤𝙬 2026 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙂𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙨

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games promises to be an action-packed and inclusive sports program! With over 200 gold medals up for grabs across 10 sports, this edition will feature the largest Para-sport medal program in Games history, awarding a record-breaking 47 medals across six sports.

Dating back to 1930, the Commonwealth Games is a prestigious international multi-sport event that unites athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations, primarily comprised of territories from the former British Empire. Since its inception as the British Empire Games, the event has been held every four years, with the exception of 1942 and 1946 due to World War II.

Over the decades, the Games have evolved: they began as the British Empire Games until 1950, then transitioned to the British Empire and Commonwealth Games until 1966, and were known as the British Commonwealth Games until 1974. In 1978, the title was simplified to the Commonwealth Games, a name it has proudly carried through twelve editions as of 2024.

✨ A significant milestone came in 2002 when athletes with disabilities were welcomed as full members of their national teams, making the Commonwealth Games the first fully inclusive international multi-sport event. In 2018, the Games made history by featuring an equal number of men's and women's medal events, and just four years later, they became the first global multi-sport event to have more events for women than men.

Throughout its history, 20 cities in nine countries have hosted the Games, with Australia leading the charge by hosting five times. Glasgow will notably become the third city to host the event more than once.

✨ And let's shine a spotlight on Emma McKeon from regional NSW, Wollongong! At her third Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Emma became Australia’s most successful Commonwealth Games athlete, achieving an astounding 20 medals, including 14 gold! What an incredible inspiration!

We are delighted to commemorate International Women’s Day 2025 by recognising the outstanding women in high performance sport within the Goulburn and North East regions of country Victoria. This day presents an opportunity to acknowledge the accomplishments and contributions of these inspiring athletes and leaders, who are breaking down barriers and establishing new benchmarks within their fields.

As we commemorate these accomplishments, let us continue to advocate for and promote gender equality throughout all areas of sport. Collectively, we can establish an environment wherein every woman has the opportunity to excel and attain her full potential.

We are excited to share the significant stakeholder engagement and support that has taken place so far! Building strong connections with our community is at the heart of our mission, and we are thrilled to see such enthusiasm and involvement.

Through various grassroots engagement methods, we have now connected and listened to just over 150 community stakeholders in a month from local residents, community groups, and organisations. Your insights and ideas have been truly appreciated and respectfully noted 🙏🏽

But that’s not all! We are working through the countless applications to join the Strategic Focus Group. In the coming weeks, we will announce this Group aimed at diving even deeper into community perspectives and system-level thinking. Please stay tuned for more details on how you can participate and contribute your thoughts.

Recreation reserves throughout the Hume region are bustling with athletics, basketball, football, hockey, netball, soccer, and tennis matches, alongside well-maintained golf courses. The high country serves as a paradise for snow sports enthusiasts, while Lake Hume and Lake Buffalo are popular destinations for water sports. Nagambie Lake is well-known for its National Standard rowing and canoeing courses. Wodonga boasts Australia's largest regional tennis complex, and cyclists are enjoying hundreds of kilometers of sealed trails and roads.

However, at present, talented young athletes across the Goulburn and North East regions are missing out on the many benefits a formal Regional Academy of Sport provides their development.

Hume Academy of Sport is needed and a high level focus group has been established and are currently fundraising finances to conduct market research, project plan development to break down the establishment of the Academy into tasks, sequencing them, estimating resources, and developing a business plan. The capital raised will directly contribute to the early success of the Academy by preparing for a future launch.

The primary goal of Hume Academy of Sport is to support talented young athletes across the Hume region.

The Academy’s objectives are:
• Identify talented athletes
• Support talented young athletes
• Provide opportunities and pathways programs
• Develop links, relationships and partnerships
• Promote personal and professional development
