Every class begins and ends with bowing, a traditional way of showing respect in japan.🙇 But why do we bow to the front of the dojo?🤔 (Shomen ni Rei)
Students and teachers bow to the front to show respect for the space they train in⛩️, and to show gratitude to past instructors who contributed to what we get to learn today.🙇
For the young children and new students, this can mean looking after the equipment and the mats. As students grow in experience, they learn to appreciate the privilege of inheriting the wisdom passed down from our late Shihan Kayo, who brought Shobukan to Australia, and from his teachers, whose efforts helped bring karate to mainland Japan.

Congratulations to Nikolina Pushnick on an outstanding achievement at the recent WKF Youth League 🌏🥋
Competing on the international stage for the very first time and finishing with an impressive 5th place result for Shobukan is something to be incredibly proud of.

Although the medal slipped away by just 2 points, Nikolina secured 5th place with a total of 14 points across 4 matches, an outstanding achievement at a competition of this level and against some of the world’s best young athletes.

Match results:
✅ vs Saudi Arabia - 6:1
❌ vs Croatia - 0:1
✅ vs Singapore - 8:1
❌ vs Kazakhstan - 0:2

This performance reflects Nikolina’s courage, composure, and the ability to control the pressure so that she could perform with freedom.
The future is bright; this is just the beginning….

A proud moment for Team Shobukan at the recent WKF Youth League in Manila May 14-17 2026. Over 900 athletes across 58 countries in attendance. 🌏🥋

For every one of our athletes, this was their very first experience competing on the international stage, and an incredible milestone in their karate journey.

Stepping onto a world platform takes courage. Competing against some of the best young athletes from around the globe provided invaluable experience, lessons, and growth that will help shape their future in the sport.

Win or lose, this experience was about representing our dojo, embracing the challenge, performing under pressure, and taking the next step in their development as athletes and young people.

We are extremely proud of the way our team conducted themselves both on and off the tatami.

Thank you to all coaches, officials, and families who helped make this opportunity a positive experience.

Recently, we celebrated the selection of the 2026 State Team and proudly presented our 2025 Sports Star Awards.

Our Sports Star Awards exist to honour the qualities that truly define high performance.

These awards are not just about results. They recognise the behaviours that lead to success, commitment, consistency, resilience, and the ability to rise under pressure.

High performance is built on standards. It’s reflected in how you show up, how you respond to challenges, and how you bounce back from the sting of setbacks.

We are proud to acknowledge the athletes who have demonstrated these qualities throughout the season and who continue to set the standard for others to follow.

Congratulations to all of our Sports Star Award winners 👏
