At 14 years old, I wrote in my diary about how I wished I could take scissors to cut the fat off my stomach.
I didn’t have social media yet. I hated my body long before even Myspace became a ‘thing’.
So when I see these statistics about girls today, it breaks my heart. But I also know that we can’t just blame Instagram and TikTok, because body hatred was around long before they were.
Our culture is breeding body dissatisfaction and the desire to be thin. Kids as young as 3 years old believe that bigger bodies are lazy, stupid or selfish - and they weren’t born thinking that, so it must have come from somewhere.
We can’t solve these issues with a social media ban or by blaming Ozempic. We need systematic, societal-level change, and that’s something I’m going to keep yelling about until it happens.
Share this if you’re with me - let’s spread these statistics around so people can see what the REAL impact is of a culture obsessed with thinness 💔
