Most athletes are told they’re “cleared to return to training.”
But being medically cleared doesn’t always mean you’re ready to perform.

Why most players “BLOW UP” during the first quarter of practice matches 😰

The most common thing I hear from all footballers (seniors and juniors) is that “I do all this running at footy training and then when it comes to games I blow up in the first quarter”.

Initially, I use to think that this is part of the tradeoff with footy, being footy fit is different to being running fit, but what about if there was a way to get “match fit” with specific and dedicated strength and conditioning training? 🤔

I can confidently say this is 💯 true!!! Yes, there is a time and place for long duration/one paced runs to get your Vo2 Max at a decent level, however if this is your routine in March, you’re asking to get a soft tissue injury and “blow up” come practice games 🤦‍♂️

AFL is trending similar to soccer nowadays, where the game is becoming more intermittent with repeated high intensity efforts and longer rest durations, so that you can attack the next contest with intent!

You need a rare blend of:
✅ Endurance
✅ Strength
✅ Speed
✅ Agility
✅ Power
✅ Mental strength
✅ Tactical awareness/Game Sense
✅ Skill ex*****on

Just working on Endurance (especially the marathon style of endurance training) might shave off some time on your time trial, but will it actually get you footy fit???

CLEARANCE DOESN’T EQUAL CAPACITY…

Most breakdowns occur when strength, load tolerance, and movement exposure haven’t been rebuilt progressively and in a systematic way. In other words, training with no scientific method, just madness!

Although working on your physical components is really important, nothing is more important in sport than your ability to play, hands down!!! ⚽️ 🏉 🏏 🎾 🏀

This study presented findings that in the AFL Draft combine, there is a poor correlation between how well an athletes tests and their career success. This included a large sample size spanning nearly 20 years and almost 1500 athletes.

But what does this actually mean??? 🤔
✅ Your technical and tactical skills for your sport should always come as a number 1 priority
✅ Testing is a poor predictor of career success at the draft combine, however extremely important once you’re in the system! At the elite level, most players have elite technical and tactical skills, and what separates you and your opponents can be something deemed as so minuscule such as lactate inflection point or acceleration over 5m
✅ Improving on your weaknesses is widely suggested, but your strengths will generally be your strengths throughout your career
