Getting to the gym is easy when motivation is high.
It’s everything else that gets in the way.
The sickness that wipes you out for six weeks. The routine that falls apart. The first session back that feels like starting from scratch. The ego check when the weights you used to lift feel heavy again.
Here’s what we know works:
Find your person 🤝A good training partner is the ultimate cheat code. When your motivation is low, theirs picks you up. When you don’t want to show up, knowing someone’s waiting for you changes everything. It’s not a weakness - it’s one of the smartest things you can do.
Start smaller than you think you need to 📉Coming back after time off? Don’t rip the whole bandage off - just rip the band-aid. Drop the weight, drop the expectations, and just get in the door. The ego check is temporary. The momentum you build from showing up is not.
Be present, not future-focused 🧠When you’re out of routine, thinking about where you want to be in six weeks will only make you feel worse about where you are right now. Focus on today. What’s one small thing you can do right now? Two thousand steps. One session. One better meal. That’s it.
Make it non-negotiable 🔒Whether that’s a PT keeping you accountable, a training buddy waiting for you, or a session already booked - remove the decision. When training is optional, it becomes easy to skip. When it’s locked in, it happens.
Remember why it matters beyond the gym 💪Training isn’t just about how you look. It’s about how you feel, how you show up for the people around you, and the version of yourself you get to be when you’re consistent.
The first session back is always the hardest. After that? It gets easier every single time.
