Have you ever noticed your heart skip a beat — right before you say or do something you later wished you hadn’t?
That’s an amygdala hijack. Your brain’s smoke alarm firing at a perceived threat, flooding your nervous system with chemicals to help you fight, freeze, or flee.
It’s not very accurate — and it’s not meant to be. Far better to pick up a threat that doesn’t exist than miss one that does.
The biggest tell? You react without thinking. Because you’re literally not. It takes six seconds for the thinking part of your brain to catch up to the emotional part.
Next time you feel your heart jump — breathe slowly, tap your chest, play a few bars of your favourite song, think of a positive memory. Just create a six-second pause and let your thinking brain come online.
Six seconds. That’s all it takes.
Your emotions are your compass.
