The hardest part about seat awareness is that a crooked seat does not feel crooked. This is because of proprioception. What feels normal to us, well, feels normal!

Most riders find out something is off from the outside first. A coach might mention it, or they might see it on a video. Some riders even argue with their coach until they see the video! You often genuinely cannot feel it until someone points it out.

This is just how the body works. It compensates so efficiently that the compensation becomes the baseline. Your horse has their own compensations (which sometimes match their rider's - it's fascinating!), but can also feel yours very clearly. They feel a heavier or harder rein, an uneven seatbone or a longer leg. Horses either quietly reorganise themselves around you, or they resist (the more crooked you are, the more the resistance shows up).๐Ÿด

Our EngagedRider Resistance Bands help with this exact issue. They connect cross-body muscle chains so you feel the difference between your left and right side in real time. They also activate proprioception points on your shoulders, back, thighs and feet. It means you can address your crookedness with immediate feedback. Not after your ride, from a video, but right there in the saddle where you can actually start to rebuild your body's habits.

Do you know your own crookedness? Share them here to help other riders!

Hand position is one of those things every coach mentions and every rider thinks they have sorted. Then you watch a video of yourself and realise your hands have been having their own conversation the whole time.

It is rarely deliberate. The tension creeps in when you are concentrating, when the horse spooks, when a movement is not quite coming together. The hands tighten and the horse feels it immediately, even when you think you are being subtle.

What helped me was stopping thinking about my hands altogether and starting to think about my elbows. Soft elbows, following elbows, tend to sort the hands out on their own. It is a small shift but it changes everything. ๐Ÿด

If steadier contact is something you are working on, SteadyHands gloves are worth trying. The strap helps to engage your elbows, so your hands can be softer.

Pictured is our ambassador .dressage (on the right, sheโ€™s wearing SteadyHands gloves without the strap done up - she just does it up when she needs a gentle reminder!)

This one stopped me for a second. ๐Ÿค

We live in a world that measures everything by how fast it happens.

But horses don't work that way. They never have.

Progress with a horse doesn't show up on a timeline. It shows up in that one ride where something finally clicks. In the moment your horse takes a breath and softens. In the session where nothing went to plan but somehow you both came out of it more connected than before.

Those moments are easy to miss if you're too focused on where you think you should be by now.

The horses have always known this. We're just slow to learn it.

Your horse wants to get it right. ๐Ÿค

Most of the time when things go wrong, it is not because they are being difficult.

It is because something we are doing is making it hard for them to understand.

Swipe through to see some of the most common things riders do that confuse their horse and how to fix them.

Save this for your next ride. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Training smarter starts with the right tools. ๐Ÿค

A lot of riders ask us if they can just use regular resistance bands. The short answer is you could, but the EngagedRider Bands are built differently and that difference matters.

Fully adjustable to suit your height and discipline. Guide stripes so you know they are sitting evenly. And a built in safety release that no other resistance band on the market has.

Because if you are serious about your position, the details matter. ๐Ÿด

There is a big difference between the two. ๐Ÿค

Getting it right once means you got lucky on the day.

Not being able to get it wrong means your body knows it. Your horse knows it. It lives in your muscle memory and shows up even when you are tired, nervous or distracted.

That is what consistent training actually builds.

Not perfection. Automaticity.

The kind that holds up when it matters most.

Nobody warned us. ๐Ÿ˜„

One lesson turned into a weekly lesson.

Weekly turned into every day.

Every day turned into selling your soul to the barn and loving every second of it.

If this is your personality now too, you're in the right place. ๐Ÿด
