Under 8 Channel v Sandy Bay

The Under 8 Channel juggernaut rolled back into its home fortress this week to take on a Sandy Bay side who, according to eyewitness reports, had driven themselves to the ground. Several vehicles were allegedly spotted in the car park displaying P-plates.

Fresh from terrorising the Auskick competition and narrowly missing selection in the AFL Mid-Season Draft, recruits Archie and Zeke bolstered an already star studded Channel lineup.

Captain Jo won the toss and, without a second thought, elected to kick towards the canteen end where the massive home crowd had assembled. Admittedly, most were there for coffee and hot chips, but a crowd is a crowd.

Sandy Bay burst out of the blocks early, but Archie immediately made his presence felt across half-back with some impressive hard-ball gets. He was well supported by Oscar, who clearly hadn't forgotten the coach's pre-game instruction of "run and pass", delivering some slick handballs out of defence.
Meanwhile, running machine Freddy had fully recovered from last fortnight's severe case of leather poisoning and was once again wreaking havoc through the middle with his trademark line-breaking runs.

Zeke announced himself to the home crowd in the second quarter with a towering mark that would have had recruiters quietly reaching for their notebooks.
Fletcher was also at his bustling best, somehow surviving two consecutive quarters in the centre while covering every blade of grass twice.

Following last week's Great Orange Debacle, rumours had circulated throughout the playing group regarding a possible coaching coup. Thankfully, enough oranges arrived to supply a small fruit market, and the coach's position was secured, for another week….

Alfie was unleashed in the centre during the third quarter and immediately began burrowing into packs as only Alfie can.
At the same time, the dynamic duo of Felix and Oliver were thrown forward.

Felix displayed outstanding tactical genius by wearing a hoodie and beanie in the arctic conditions, leaving opponents unsure whether he was a player, a supporter, or a concerned parent.
This masterstroke created confusion and valuable space for Oliver, who spent the quarter attempting to run past opponents, many of whom appeared to have upgraded from their P-plates to full licences during the half-time break.

Down back, Jo and Fletcher wore their opponents like gloves, only briefly losing concentration when Fletcher discovered a feather of such size and quality that it had the crowd nervously checking around them for a stray ostrich.

The play of the day arrived in the third quarter when Zeke decided the crowd deserved another highlight. Gathering the ball near the centre, he set off on a devastating run before finishing with a brilliant goal that sent the canteen-end faithful into absolute scenes. The roar that followed could probably be heard from Woodbridge to Kingston, although local authorities have declined to investigate.

With the coach pulling out what little hair remained while attempting to manage rotations, he was ultimately rescued by the team manager/mother, who expertly realigned the magnets and restored order for the final term.

The last quarter produced another highlight when Fletcher burst clear, charged towards goal and slammed through a beauty. The entire team swarmed him in celebration, although several players later admitted they weren't entirely sure who had kicked it—they just recognised the universal signal for excitement.

After outstanding debuts, the new recruits dominated the awards.

Zeke claimed the canteen voucher after an all-round performance that seemed to have him involved in every contest, regardless of where he started.
Archie earned a trip to Frosty Dog following a blistering debut packed with marks, goals and enough highlights to justify his own post-match press conference.

Another terrific performance from the Channel boys, who continue to prove that Under 8 football is best played with enthusiasm, teamwork, and a healthy supply of oranges.

Yesterday the Channel Under 11 Girls took on Lindisfarne in what turned out to be a tough and physical game. Before the match, the girls were lucky enough to have some North Melbourne players come and speak to them and cheer them on, which was a fantastic experience and gave everyone a real boost.

Despite the challenging contest, the girls showed just how well they can play footy when they work together. Their effort, determination and teamwork were on display all game, and they never stopped competing.

A big congratulations to Tildy, who led the side as captain and did a fantastic job. She set a great example with her leadership and effort throughout the match.

The Canteen Voucher Award goes to Marli for playing her best game of footy yet. Marli worked hard to win the ball, got herself into great positions around both the forward and backline, and showed excellent determination all day.

The Frosty Day Voucher Award goes to Sophie for her outstanding effort across the entire game. Sophie laid strong tackles, kept the energy high, encouraged her teammates, and helped keep the girls focused and involved right until the final siren.

Well done to all the girls for their hard work and resilience. Keep bringing the same effort and teamwork each week!

Channel Red vs Brighton Blue

Today saw the Red team up early and heading north for the longest road trip in football to Brighton.

With parents still on their first coffee and the boys looking like they needed 6 more hrs of sleep we were into the warm up early.
Josh was a late out so we went with 3/4/3 across the Zones.

1st.
If the boys were still half asleep they were woken quickly with Brighton piling on the pressure early. The boys in the middle in were attacking the ball hard. Xander run and breaking tackles was giving us good looks early. Levi and Clayton were also on the hunt for the footy. Tackling pressure was hot by both boys.
Lochie and Arthur were again working well in the forward line. Lochie was not taking a backward step and for his size wasn’t afraid to take it up to the bigger boys. Breakthrough two tackles and got it on the right boot to sneak it through for a goal.
Arthur also lead after lead was rewarded with the goal of his own.

2nd.
This was a hot contest and these boys weren’t lying down. Again a faster start by Brighton saw us have to dig deep to claw a few goals back. Jaxs and Jasper were working hard in the guts. Try to stick their tackles. Their second and third efforts were amazing to watch.

Levi and Lochie were the mosquito fleet upfront and we’re trying to run brighten off their feet. Again a smaller boys weren’t taking a backward step as both Levi and Lachie worked together to get an amazing team goal.
Clayton was getting double teamed in the forward line but his attack at the football was A class. When the ball was in flight if he didn’t mark it he brought it down to his teams to get us every chance for goal opportunities.

3rd.
These boy were bang up and knew they were in a solid and powerful game of football.
The contested ball was high this quarter and we found it hard to clear the middle. Gab was working over time in defence but never gave up the fight. Jasper, Xander and Zackkis attack on football went up a gear throughout this quarter which gave our forwards more of a look. Linc step up and broke 2 tackles got it on the boot for his 2nd of the year.

4th
Another hard fought quarter. Again jumped early in the quarter with Brighton hitting sore board early. But the resilience and fight in this young bunch of boys is something to be celebrated.
They never gave up the fight. Never lied down and kept work hard for each other. They all worked tirelessly across all zone and managed to get it to Xander who had an amazing snap to reward himself and the team with a goal.

This was a tuff hard fought game by the boys. Some heavy hits and tackles. But they never gave up they kept attacking that footy .

Great work boys. 💪

These awards are getting harder to give away as all the boys keep playing well.

The frosty dog went to Xander today. He’s never ending running, breaking tackles and never afraid to put his body on the line, kept his teammate in the game.

The channel canteen award went to Lochie. Again for his attack on the footy backing up his teammates up when needed.
never given up, even if attack on the ball left a few wounds. .

Rest up boys and well played. Proud of all your efforts today. 💪💪💪

U12 Girls v Claremont Blue

This week our girls were lucky to be a part of the North Melbourne Women's Community Round, which meant we were joined by some AFLW players before the game and given a special best on ground award.
Huge thanks to North Melbourne, AFL Tas and STJFL for organising this opportunity for our players 💙🤍

The girls hit the field pumped for the big occasion but found it hard to get started, finishing the first quarter with just 1 point.

After a big pep talk the girls kicked things into gear and started playing catch up.
It was an even second quarter, which meant they were still 2 goals down at the main break.

That's when the lollies came out and the energy levels lifted.
Every player dug deep and it paid off with Channel taking the win after a huge team effort in the second half.

The star of the day was Captain Grace "JDawg" Jarvis who was often seen bursting out of the pack, taking a bounce & sending the ball flying into the forward line.
Her speed and strength have been obvious every game but somehow she stepped it up a notch today.
She topped it off with a goal and took home the canteen voucher and North Melbourne pack 👌

The Frosty Dog voucher went to Makayla who finished with 4 spectacular goals.

Birthday Girl Mahli also found herself on the scoreboard, which made the cupcakes after the game even sweeter.

The girls have improved so much this season and their confidence is growing every week.
They go into the long weekend with their heads high, looking to make the most of the break so they can come out firing in our upcoming Big Freeze game ❄️

Channel Under 9 Black round 7

Sunday saw the boys at home again in very dewy conditions, taking on a Kingborough White team that looked more like Under 11’s than Under 9’s.

After his heroics last week, Isaac A was on “rock off” duty, again dominating to win and kick with to the Ashton Denehey end!

With the size mismatch, and slippery conditions, it was big Beau in the guts who was getting his hands on it and using his strength early, feeding Tommy and Austin who were getting a bit of it. Up forward, Sammy read the kick in, took the mark and set it up for the duo of Nixon and Max to out smart the defence, with Max banging it through the big sticks! First goal of the game. Although we got on the board, the boys looked a little slow and intimidated at times and were asked to stand up and run them off their feet. The response was instant!

Max’s reward for kicking a goal…….. throw on a Kingborough jumper for the second quarter! The second quarter got under way, and as mentioned, Max was lurking in the Tigers forward line, almost kicking a goal! In the middle, Banjo and Noah were prominent, and Mason off the back of his best on performance was absolutely dominant around the contest. The ball spent a large chunk of time in the forward line for the quarter, with Austin and Tommy locking the ball in and creating opportunities, whilst Beau continued his new found confidence by outmuscling the Kingborough boys to kick a sausage roll! Not to be out done, Isaac B got on the end of the ball a few times and managed to slot our second snag for the quarter! All of a sudden the boys were playing with confidence and linking up with some impressive chains of play from defence to forward.

Half time saw a very happy coach, and the boys were up and about. Once again, the magnets were thrown around, and Sammy headed over to the Tigers for the third term, putting a very hard tag on Max! The boys were back at it, and Isaac A was straight into the ruck, showing off his impressive ruck work, feeding Hudson and Nixon. The three boys combined for one of the more impressive plays of the match, as the ball came out of full back via Tommy to Austin who marked, passed to Nixon who marked. Isaac A made a massive lead and dragged two Tigers with him leaving the dangerous Hudson alone, kick, mark, play on! Hudson to a leading Max, and away we went. Not quite a goal, but an amazing passage of play granted what we are trying to play like. Up forward, Max was presenting well, unlucky not to get on the board, and Banjo looked like he was going to kick 5! Down back the boys played tight, and restricted well. Austin played one of his best quarters for the season as he marked, kicked, passed and just found himself in the thick of everything. Despite his diminutive stature, he was running in head first which was great to see.

Austin’s reward for an amazing effort…….. you guessed it! Off to the Tigers for the final quarter, where he again hunted the ball and fired off two shots on goal, both missing the target fortunately for Channel. Tommy had it on a string in the middle in the last quarter, with Banjo and Max in the absolute thick of it down back. Play of the quarter, Beau plucked the centre clearance, busted through two Tigers, and put it right on the chest of Nixon who took a strong mark. Sammy was looking dangerous up forward, as was Hudson.

The game ended, and another impressive performance against a far bigger team. I am very proud of how the boys went about it, and they all dug in, both teams played some great footy in amazing spirits.

Awards could have gone to a number of players, Banjo had a ton of it, and Max presented well all day. However there were two performances that stood out.

Austin, the 2ft pocket rocket after a slow start to the day got his head down and went head first into everything. He showed great composure with the ball, and made sure he found targets with his disposal! His efforts saw him awarded the Frosty Dog Boucher for the week.

And another player who has been lacking a little confidence was Beau. Beau is a big strong boy, who is just understanding how to use his body. We challenged Beau to just get it, run, and bust through em! And that is what he did from the first bounce. Nobody could bring him down, and his confidence grew. In the third, he went one on one with the biggest of the Kingborough boys, held him off, and used his body to win the contest. Great work Beau, and his efforts earned him the Lynn Cross Canteen voucher!

A pleasing effort leading into the Long Weekend bye from the boys. Can’t wait for the next one!

Channel Under 10s vs Kingborough Tigers Black

Channel Under 10s kicked off the round in style this week with Friday Night Footy against Kingborough Tigers Black. After a late venue change, we were pleased to host the Tigers at Snug for what has become one of the great rivalries in our competition. The two teams have developed a strong rivalry over the last couple of years, and with both sides evenly matched, another hard-fought game was expected.

Odin led the team as Captain for the week and did a terrific job, setting the tone with his effort and commitment. Alongside Odin, Henry, Ted, Harry, Izaak, Lincoln, Sascha, Oscar, Max, James, Paddy, Rhys and Jett all played their part in a competitive and entertaining game that showcased the growth and development of both teams.

A major focus for our group this week was being a great teammate, and the boys embraced this challenge brilliantly. It was fantastic to see players celebrating each other's successes throughout the game, whether it was a goal, a strong tackle, a great mark or a selfless act. The excitement and encouragement shown by the boys created a wonderful team atmosphere and highlighted just how much they enjoy playing together.

James continued his strong form around the contest, winning several hit-outs and consistently finding the football. His willingness to handball to teammates in better positions helped bring others into the game and was a great example of the team's focus on being selfless and supportive teammates.

Henry provided one of the highlights of the night with a brave mark running back with the flight of the ball. Showing great courage, he held onto the mark, steadied himself and then launched a beautiful long left-foot kick through the big sticks, sparking plenty of excitement from teammates and supporters alike.

Rhys once again showed terrific leadership around the ground, encouraging teammates and setting a strong example with his effort and attitude. The boys are also very excited to celebrate a special milestone next round at the Big Freeze, with Rhys set to play his 50th game for Channel. Rhys will become the first player in our team to reach this achievement, and we can't wait to see him lead the boys through the banner before the game.

The Coaches Award this week went to Lincoln. Lincoln continues to show tremendous improvement, works hard on playing to his strengths, and is incredibly coachable. His willingness to listen, learn and apply feedback is a credit to him and has been a key factor in his development this season.

The Frosty Dog Voucher was awarded to Ted for his competitiveness, physicality and strength in contests. Ted attacked every challenge with determination and gave his teammates great energy through his willingness to compete all game long.

Max continued his reliable season with another strong performance, while Paddy worked hard to create opportunities and bring energy to the forward line. Oscar's toughness and willingness to compete never wavered, while Sascha continued his strong improvement and involvement around the contest. Harry, Izaak and Jett all contributed important efforts throughout the evening, helping the team maintain pressure and support one another across the ground.

A special thank you goes to our parents, families and supporters who continue to create such a positive environment for our players. The way the boys get around one another on the field is a reflection of the encouragement and support they receive from the sidelines. Their smiles while they play are infectious, and it is wonderful to see everyone enjoying being part of the team. Thank you also to our parent helpers who assist each week and help make game day possible.

Friday Night Footy once again provided a fantastic atmosphere, and the boys should be proud of the way they represented the club, supported one another and competed throughout the evening.
