He never wanted to compete.

Every time a tournament came up, the answer was the same. No thanks.

This year, he finally said yes.

Then he put the work in. Week after week he ran his form, asked his coaches what to fix, and went back and fixed it.

He came home with a medal. Honestly, that's not the part we'll remember.

We'll remember how his form looks now compared to a few months ago. Sharper. Calmer. Sure of itself. That kind of focus doesn't come from a trophy. It comes from choosing to work at something hard.

It's R U OK? Day.
One thing thirteen years of teaching has taught us: kids don't announce it when something's wrong. They go quiet. They stop putting their hand up. They train the whole class without saying a word, and if you're not paying attention it just looks like a good, well-behaved night.
The mat is unusually good for noticing this. Same kids, same room, same time every week. When a child who normally can't stop talking suddenly can't be bothered, it shows.
So our instructors ask. Not in a big way. Just "you alright tonight?" while everyone's tying their belts. Sometimes the answer is nothing. Sometimes it's a whole story about school.
You don't need to be a professional to ask a kid how they're going. You just need to know them well enough to notice when something's changed.

The sensei teaching your child on Wednesday night was once the shy kid on this mat.

Four of our instructors started at KICKS in 2013, as children in the afterschool program. They earned their junior black belts here as kids. Last year they earned their adult black belts.

Student. Student leader. Coach. Sensei.

They're not teaching from a certificate they picked up somewhere else. They're teaching from the exact journey your child is about to start. They remember being the nervous one at the back of the room, because they were.

He's since competed at the World Championships in New Zealand and Las Vegas, tested in front of Grandmaster Jeff Speakman, and he's about a year off his junior black belt. These days he helps teach the little ones.

We tell this one a lot, because most parents turn up sure their kid is the exception. The shy one. The one who won't cope.

They're not the exception. That's just how it starts.

“I don’t think he’ll actually get on the mat…”
That’s something we’ve heard from countless parents before their child’s very first martial arts class.
Their child was shy.
Quiet.
Holding onto their parent a little tighter than usual.
First-day nerves are very real for kids.
So we told him he could just watch if he wanted to.
But after a few minutes… something changed.
He took one step onto the mat.
Tried one move.
Then another.
By the end of the class?
He was smiling, laughing, and asking his mum if he could come back tomorrow.
We see this happen all the time.
Sometimes kids just need a safe place to try, supportive instructors, and a little encouragement.
