Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan Byford/Serpentine is a small, but proud, club founded over 30 years ago with the vision of giving the local community the ability to train and keep fit whilst learning self-defence at the same time. Adopting the tenets of Etiquette, Modesty, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit, our students become confident members of society with a vision of making the world a better place.

Our club regularly competes in both State and National championships. Our students have competed at the 2017 World Poomse Championships in Peru, South America; at the 2011 Commonwealth Championships in Chennai, India, and other international competitions in Japan, Vietnam, India, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Fiji, and Malaysia.

Our Master Instructor, Neil Brickwood, 7th Dan, has proudly called the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale home his entire life, growing up on a farm in Hopelands and attending what was then Hopelands Primary School. He was a member of the local Serpentine scouts, played for the Serpentine junior football club, served as President and Coach of the Byford junior football club for 10 years, during which time the club won their first grand final, served 12 months as president of the Byford Progress Association and founded a youth club with the idea of developing fitness of mind and body. Master Brickwood has dedicated his life to promoting health through fun activities within our community. He started his taekwondo journey in 1994 and has spent many years training residents in Tae Kwon Do at the Oh Do Kwan Byford/Serpentine club. In the last 30 years, over 140 Byford/Serpentine students have earned the qualification of 1st Dan Black Belt or higher.

Master Brickwood trains under Grand Master Ross Hartnett, 9th Dan, and Grand Master Carmella Hartnett, 9th Dan, leaders in the Australian Taekwondo Community. Serving as an A-class referee, he has refereed in many national and some International competitions and has served as the qualified state trainer for referees in W.A. Master Brickwood holds a Certificate III in fitness and training, a Certificate IV in training and is an instructor for the Les Mills RPM classes at the Serpentine Jarrahdale Recreation Centre.

Both the Byford and Serpentine branches of Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan have been a part of our local community for more than 30 years. We are a local club, from homegrown stock, with local people running the club and supporting our community. Our instructors have years of experience and have achieved the ranks of 7th Dan, 6th Dan, and 5th Dan, so you can have confidence that you are training with qualified, passionate, dedicated, and caring instructors.

Come down and try for yourself with your first 2 lessons free. We have students from all stages of life, aged 6 to 70. You're never too old to start; it’s about fitness, the balance of mind and body, and community. Taekwondo teaches confidence, discipline, flexibility, and movement, and while you're working on your fitness, you are learning self-defence along the way.
