Last week the SWSM team sat down with physio Matt Hicks for a Q&A on managing chronic pain.

Chronic musculoskeletal pain affects an estimated 29% of Australians, making it one of the most common issues our clients live with day to day.

Matt shared insights from his own clinical experience, including how he navigates the compensable claims system to help optimise outcomes for patients along the way.

Investing in our team’s knowledge means better care for the people we work with. Thanks for sharing your expertise, Matt 👏

Day 5: Connection.

Some of the most meaningful recovery we see at SWSM happens in groups. In a hydrotherapy class where someone realises they’re not the only one managing what they’re managing. In a chronic disease exercise group where showing up twice a week becomes something to look forward to.

Connection shouldn’t a bonus. For a lot of people, it’s what makes everything else possible.

If isolation has been part of your experience - from injury, illness, or just life - there are people here.

Day 4: Mental wellbeing. And today is also R U OK? Day.

When you’re injured, in pain, or managing a chronic condition, the psychological load is real. The frustration of being sidelined. The anxiety of not knowing when things will improve. The identity shift that comes with not being able to do the things you love. For a lot of the patients we see, the physical injury is only part of what they’re carrying, and that toll doesn’t always show up on a scan.

Our Psychologists work within our multi-disciplinary team because we know recovery is never just physical, and these things don’t exist in isolation.

R U OK? Day is a good reminder to ask the question, of the people in your life, and of yourself. And to keep asking. If you’re struggling with the mental side of recovery, or you know someone who is, it’s worth talking to someone.

Day 3: Rest and sleep.

You can train well, eat well, and still be leaving gains on the table if your sleep is poor. For women especially (across different life stages) sleep quality has a direct impact on recovery, mood, hormones, pain tolerance, and performance.

Swipe for practical habits that actually move the needle.

Day 2: Movement. And today also happens to be World Physiotherapy Day.

The version of “being active” that works is the one you’ll actually do. Not the one that feels like punishment, or the one that only counts if it’s an hour long, or the one that only happens when you’re not tired.

Fittingly, this year’s World Physiotherapy Day theme is cardiovascular disease and stroke prevention, management, and rehabilitation - a reminder of how far movement as medicine really reaches. Physios play an active role in helping people recover from stroke, manage heart disease, and build the physical capacity that protects long-term health.

At SWSM, we work with women to find movement that fits their life; chronic conditions, injury history, post-natal, low energy, never exercised before. It all starts with where you are, not where you think you should be. Our Physiotherapy team supports that same philosophy across the community, working with everyone from athletes to those managing chronic disease, surgical recovery, and complex rehab.

Your body is worth moving. On your terms.

This week is Women’s Health Week and we’re dedicating each day to one part of the picture.

Day 1: Nutrition.

Ever wondered what actually happens when you see a Dietitian? Swipe through to see how it works - it’s less about meal plans and “can’t haves,” and more about your life, your routine, and finding an approach that’s realistic and sustainable for you.

At SWSM, our Dietitian Hannah Payne | Sports Dietitian works with women across all stages of life. Whether you’re training, recovering, managing a health condition, or just trying to feel more consistently good. If food feels complicated right now, a single session can make it a lot simpler.

The post-marathon window is one of the most important (and most under-managed) periods in a runner’s year.

Your body has just done something enormous. What you do now determines how quickly you recover, and whether you come back to training stronger or already carrying a problem.

Swipe through for what the four weeks after a marathon actually looks like, from a clinical standpoint.

If something didn’t feel right on race day - or if a ni**le has flared since - it’s worth getting assessed before you start building your next training block.

Today the SWSM team swapped our usual work attire for our favourite sporting jerseys to support Jersey Day, a national day encouraging Australians to wear their favourite jersey and start a conversation with their family about organ and tissue donation.

Jersey Day was inspired by the gift of life that Nathan Gremmo gave to six people when he became an organ donor at age 13. It’s a simple idea, but it matters: one organ donor can save the lives of up to seven people and help many more through eye and tissue donation.

Have you had the conversation with your family yet?

Chris Ius. Commonwealth Games medallist. And someone our team has had the privilege of working alongside.

When Chris walked back through the clinic with that medal, it wasn’t just a great moment for him… it was a reminder of why this work matters.

The practitioners at SWSM who work with elite athletes don’t leave that experience at the door when their next patient walks in. The same standards, the same precision, the same commitment to getting someone back to their best. That’s what every patient gets, regardless of whether they’re chasing a Commonwealth podium or getting back to Saturday morning sport.

Elite involvement sharpens us. And our patients are better for it.

Congratulations, Chris. Proud of you.
