The final warp up of 2023. Some are kicking off the trainers and swapping them for slippers and lycra being replaced with loungewear, this is true for some not all. Read on to catch up on our athletes activities over the past few weeks and months:
Carolien Hiltermann in Switzerland was keeping her trainers on and laced up. 2 x 10km runs within 7 days. The Lausanne 10km the the Morges night run. Brilliant pacing on both runs, completing the runs in 46 and 45 mins (seconds rounded down!). This certainly demonstrated bike training hugely supports the run training.
Stephen Farrell took on the New York marathon, switching from the 3 disciplines to focus on just 1. Lots of changes in his personal life meant fitting in just 1 discipline was far simpler and a wise decision. Stephen’s commitment to his training cannot be faulted. He managed to juggle and keep all plates spinning to ensure he turned up on the start line ready to go with a smile. Even more important he crossed the line beaming, proud to wear his NYC marathon finishers t shirt. The stretch goal of 4 hrs was not hit but that did not matter it was well and truly MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
Matt Hickman headed over the Aus for the IM 70.3 Bussleton race. Similar to Stephen the past few months were not ideal but a positive frame of mind allowed him to make the most of his training and be on the start line ready and ready to empty the tank. That he did and can be proud of delivering his best bike ever. Another medal and finisher t shirt bagged coming down the finish chute in 5 hrs 8 mins. Top 40 in his age group is for sure another win.
Phil Thomas got the best out of a tricky build up to Melbourne 70.3 in November. Unfortunately, he was hampered by a calf strain so it was down to attacking the swim-bike which he definitely did, showing some of his best numbers on the bike. Lots learnt to take forward into his summer of racing in Aus!

Paul Hunt ran Valencia Marathon to close out his 2023. It was never going to be his fastest attempt over the distance given the summer of triathlon BUT he still managed to achieve an amazing time of 2hr 46min!
And this wrap up closes out our 2023. Not just over the past few weeks and months but the past 12 our ABCpure athletes have once again continued to inspire us and each other, ride the highs and lows, laugh, cry, have dreams shattered and realised – all part of the journey we experience with swim, bike and run. As long as it remains FUN we know we are all doing lots of things right. Have FUN over the festive period and we can’t wait to report on your “antics and activities” in 2024.

SEPTEMBER SUMMARY of athlete’s action:

At the start of the month Sallyann Soper joined her children in Brighton for some action. She participated in the sprint distance aquathlon, 750m swim and 5km run. Despite tricky sea conditions she navigated her way round the courses to finish in 45 mins 27 secs and bag an impressive and deserved 2nd place in her age group and 4th female overall.
A few weeks later Sallyann was back on the start line, wetsuit only this time for the Serpentine open water swim in London. The sun was shining for her and she exited the water with a big smile, loving the swim and feeling strong. 3.2km executed in 1 hr 9 mins – super swimming Sal.

Matt Hickman had his head down and foot on the gas pedal for a 40km TT in Cambridge. A very solid effort saw him stop the clock just inside 1 hr 10 mins. Keeping pressure on the pedals will be key as he trains for IM 70.3 Western Australia in Dec.
Alex Pernet hopped from Switzerland to France to race the Nyon middle (ish) distance tri, 2.3km swim, 92km bike and 20km run. Bike and run not flat – 1500m elevation on the bike and 255m of up on the run. The day was all about enjoyment and finishing with a smile – job done in 7 hours, well done Alex. Hope it was swim, bike, run, fun for you!?

Richard File travelled to Spain for the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra. He was once again doubling up, warming up with a Super Sprint on the Friday ahead of his main event the Standard distance tri on the Sunday. 34 mins and 35 secs of racing on the Fri was good enough to give him a 4th position. On Sunday he went 2 better and claimed the 2nd spot, a silver medal in his age group in a very impressive time of 3 hrs 4 mins and 39 secs. A shimmering end to another medal stacked season – now time for some R & R please!

Dorian Craig ended his racing year in Kent at the Hever Castle Half Iron distance triathlon. After his main race of the year was ended by a mechanical in July, he dusted himself off to get back on the horse to get set for this one. His efforts were rewarded with a sub 6hr finish time over the hilly course and a deserved 16th place overall.

Paul Hunt jumped off his holiday plane, straight into the London Duathlon. After a little recovery from an ironman AND a holiday, he still managed to grind out a solid race in 2hrs 19min and 14th overall.

Ponpet Thamavongsa raced his dream over in Nice at the inaugural men’s Ironman World Championships, finishing in a very respectable time of 12.01.56. It was a true celebration of all the hours, months and years of consistent training and one he thoroughly enjoyed!

A HUGE well done to all our athletes from all at ABCpure.

ACTION from ABCpure ATHLETES during AUGUST

Kicking off at the start of the month, Carolien Hiltermann and Alex Pernet were racing their local Olympic distance tri in Nyon, Switzerland. As you may imagine the bike and run routes are not flat, testing the athletes with lumps, circa 500m elevation on the bike and 100m on the run. Throw in some choppy lake conditions to make the event a real test. Feedback from both Caro and Alex revealed they both felt unable to show their A game but an A for effort and getting stuck in. Caro finished just (31 secs) over the 3 hr mark and Alex came in just under 2 hrs 45 mins. A for AWESOME effort!

For her 2nd time Hannah Oliver was taking the plunge (again) in the Thames 13km YES 13km marathon swim down the Thames. The 13km route takes the swimmers from Henely to Marlow. The swim is split into 4 sections where swimmers have to exit the water at 3 locks. Hannah completed the 13km swim plus some clambering out and in, in a very IMPRESSIVE finish time of 4:16:49. I was very pleased to know post swim Hannah still had enough strength in her arms to enjoy her fav treat – ice cream!

Richard File was once again travelling overseas to race, this time no bike, wetsuit and trainers for the Sprint Aquathlon 1km swim and 5km run in Belgium. A solid effort in both the swim and the run saw Richard claim another podium spot finish, 3rd in 51 mins 57 secs. (swim = 21.15, run = 27.31).

Over in the US at the New York City ½ marathon it was just not Stephen Farrell’s day. He experienced his 1st first DNF as an athlete – which we now happens to us all including the pro’s. As Stephen said – “I felt off all morning and just had no legs…I could have sat down on the start line and fallen asleep”. He did not and gave it ago – KUDOS. After about 6km the legs felt solid and taking his race bib off felt the right decision. I am v pleased to say Stephen has not dwelled or allowed that experience the define his running or fitness. He is back putting the miles in for the NYC marathon on the 5th Nov.

Richard Ruffell raced his and many other athletes dream at the 70.3 WORLD CHAMPS in Finland. It was a long time coming since qualifying back in the depths of Covid but he showed he still has it, finishing in a VERY IMPRESSIVE sub 5hr 30min and 55th in his age category. A super strong race he can be very proud of – we are Richard!

I am sure you will all join me in applauding the awesome efforts from our athletes during Aug.

There was plenty of action to “jump up and down with joy” about during July’s racing – read on to be inspired and inspired to DREAM BIG…..

Cat’s athletes:
1st July Chrissie Williams was back on the start line after an absence from racing. Chrissie was taking part in a Dorney Lake classic – The Banana Man. As Chrissie always does she gets stuck in and keeps fighting to the finish line. Her racing may be a little rusty but her grit has not been watered down. 2 hrs 58 secs with a very impressive swim split of 1.40 per 100m. 4th in her age group and 8th female overall – still got it Chrissy!

2nd July:
Karl Chaterjee made his dream come true and became an IRONMAN. He ran down the red carpet after the 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42.2km run in Germany Frankfurt to become a well and truly deserved long distance athlete. Karl’s prepped has been text book, ensure nothing would catch him out on race day. He was rewarded with completing the event inside his goal time of sub 14 hours, crossing the line, elated, excited and a little exhausted 13 hours 52 mins 31 secs. Coach Cat was doing more than jumping up and down with joy when she knew his dream came true. Team work does = dream work!

Alex Lumley was in Oxford for a quirky distance tri, in between sprint and OD, 1km swim, 35km bike and 7km run. Alex was on fire today, wrapping the event up in less than 2 hrs, 1 hr 53 mins, 46 secs. Every leg of the race was impressive, but the run is worthy of a special mention, sub 30 mins, 4.13 pace – take that competitors!!!!

Matt Hickman was in the stunning and breath-taking village of Walchsee Austria for the Challenge Family middle distance race. The plan did not go to plan, the wheels came off the plan when a broken chain on the bike put an early end to his race. Kudos to Matt, he did his 21.1km’s the next day so all not lost! And fuel for the fire for his next event in Aug.

8th July Richard File was racing a sprint at Dorney Lake, 750/20/5 km. The objective was to keep sharp between major races and that is what he did. Fire up the engine, win his age group in a time of 1 hr 20 mins 51 secs. I think we can def say: objective met.

23rd July Alex Lumley was back on the start line at the Wimbledon Half Mara. Today was about the run being a solid training day but the legs were not playing ball. Pin was pulled at 16km. 16km of solid running so lots still gained. (I think Alex learnt the hard way house moving activities for 48 hrs prior not ideal prep!).

Ben’s athletes:
Ponpet Thamavongsa had an amazing performance over the ironman distance in Thun Switzerland, bagging his dream spot for the Ironman World Championships! ! In hot conditions he gritted out a world worthy performance in 11hrs 25min resulting in his highest AG ranking thus far in 27th. A short turn around now for France in September!

Paul Hunt was over at Ironman Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) putting on a great show! Stopping the clock on the 10hr mark was a fantastic result, especially given he had to overcome some puncture issues which added 15-20min of time and stress to his day. He ran himself back into the mix and ended with a great performance and more progress to his racing over this distance.

Richard Ruffell raced Outlaw Holkham Half, overall a very strong performance in 5hrs 25mins. He was hampered on the run with his body being out of sync with his fuelling / hydration BUT he still managed a very respectable time and the end result was a spot on the podium in his age group!

July has been JUST MEGA! WE are so so so proud of all our athletes, the delivered performances were thoroughly deserved. As you have read from 2 performances, dreams can come true…..

The season is picking up momentum....during June many of our athletes enjoyed some overseas sun and glorious British weather whilst swim, bike, running!

3rd June: Richard File was in Madrid Spain for the European Tri Champs. The swim was cancelled due to poor water quality so it was a duathlon 5/40/10km. Richard felt / reported the tank felt empty right from the start, just way off the pace right from the gun. That said he fought and gave his best effort on the day to finish in 3 hrs 12 mins and a very rewarding 2nd in his agre group (75-79). Plus a silver medal round his neck as his silver lining!

11th June: Enjoying some sunshine but not here in the UK but overseas in the USA, Stephen Farrel completed the IM Eagleman 70.3. A tough day out where Stephen just felt the legs were not with him on the bike and run. He took some sensible pacing decisions, backed off the watts a little on the bike to ensure the run was a run! As Stephen said "Not my best day and i def put the endure into endurance today". Great effort and performance Stephen, showing your ability to adapt on race day to how you feel and demonstrating your mental strength and not giving up mentality - 5 hrs 39 mins.

11th June: Alex Lumley was taking part in a "classic" on the UK tri calendar, "The Royal Windsor Triathlon". A super performance across swim, bike and run crossing the line in 2 hrs 48 mins. The specific run training with some hills paid dividends with Alex being able to enjoy overtaking many on the lumpy run leg. His goal was a sub 5 per km pace for the 10km of which he smashed, holding 4.50 per km pace.

25th June: I am very excited about this next entry, over the past few years Claire Chapman has not been on the start line for an event. Today changed that. Claire was at Dorney Lake for an open water swim. The plan was for the 3.8km event, she then decided prior to the event the 3.8km did not seem like a big enough challenge so changed to the 5km. A challenge she of course rose to and accomplished. Goal sub 2 hrs and that is what she achieved, 1 hr 53 mins and this was "sans" (without) a wetsuit so an even more impressive swim! Looking forward to seeing you back on start lines again Claire. AWESOME effort well done.

25th June: Back overseas again, Alex Pernet was lining up in Switzerland for the Vallée de Joux Sprint Triathlon. Alex had a very busy few weeks ahead of the tri so prep was not ideal. We decided giving the race a go was the right thing to do and he absolutely gave it a GO, so KUDOS. As per his feedback, "not my best day" but he got some experience, blew off some cobwebs, dusted off some race rustyness and is chomping at the bit for his next tri next month. As always positives to be taken, learns from the swim, bike felt great and we know he has better run legs.

Stayed tuned for a July update where we have some loooonger races to report on.
More congrats, well done's, HIGH 5's to our stars in June.

Another month has passed so another months of action to catch up on:

7th May Pon Thamavongsa headed over the Marbella 70.3 and put in one of his best half performances to date. Fully committed to the effort and having raced it the year before he had a clear goal to enable minutes to come off and he made it happen - he shaved off 7mins! Nailing many goals including a 5hr 19min and with that nailed down he bagged a 70.3 world championship spot in Finland for later this year!

8th May Ibiza World Long Distance Champs
Richard File was on the sunny island for the 3km / 120km / 30km triathlon. A tough start to the day with some sickness in the swim but that did not deter or stop him. He kept pushing / peddling on the bike and kept putting 1 foot going in front of the other on the run to take the age group win in 10 hours 37 mins. Yet another win for us all to be proud of and celebrate, so thank you and well done!

18th May Carolien Hiltermann and Alex Pernet were taking part in a 16k run in Bern, Switzerland. Looking at the profile of the run there was no flat the downhill came first then all the uphill to the finish, 170m elevation gain. Both stayed super strong with that finish line in sight. Alex 1 hr 15 mins 46 secs and Carolien 1 hr 17 mins 10 secs.

13th May an early season classic on the 70.3 schedule, IM Mallorca. Both Karl Chaterjee and Kat Wildeshaus were using the event as prep for up coming full IM events later in the season. Poor Kat was sick leading up to the event but went with a very open and realistic mindset. Fun training day out. Her determination got her round with valuable lessons made ahead of Roth. Karl had a great race pacing each leg as predicted. He was rewarded for his hard hard work over the past few months and realised his fitness, over taking many cyclists on the big climb!! More reward with a finish time of 6 hrs 19 mins. Karl you should be full of confidence and getting excited to go looooonger!

21st May Stephen Farrel was dusting off some race rustyness at the Jersey Man (USA) tri ahead of his 70.3. Job done and very well done. Learns made, fun had and the body had a very solid hit out. The course had very little flat so it was up and down for the journey. Clock stopped with fists pumping in: 3 hrs 10 mins

13th May Scott Toomer was at Battersea Park for a 1/2 marathon. Recently the focus has been on the bike and this performance shows his running pedigree and how the bike can support enhancing your running. A new PB 1 hr 26 mins 46 secs, 5th in his age group and 47th out of 1016 runners. BOOM!

20th May Paul Hunt raced the Nottingham Half which is one of the UK's season openers. The spring temperatures got there just in time for him to enjoy a solid race finishing in 4hrs 47mins. He couldn't quite kick into that hard / race mode, fear not, there are many more races on the horizon to build from that this summer!

I hope some of the MAGIC our athletes have produced in May has inspired you for your up coming season. RACING IS ON!
