To the Adelaide Wanderers Soccer Club Community
After nearly 40 years, it is with a very heavy heart that the committee has made the incredibly difficult decision to fold the Adelaide Wanderers Soccer Club.
This decision has not been made lightly. Over the past three months, the committee has been in open and honest discussion, exploring every possible option to keep the club alive. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts and the commitment shown by many, we have reached the difficult conclusion that we can no longer sustainably continue the club.
First and foremost, we would like to thank the current committee sincerely, coach and the playing group from the 2025 season for everything they have put into the club. Your time, effort and dedication during this challenging period have not gone unnoticed and are deeply appreciated.
We also want to extend our gratitude to all past players, coaches, committee members, volunteers, supporters, sponsors and opposition clubs who have been part of the Adelaide Wanderers journey.
The club began its journey as Uni Blue Wanderers in 1986 and has enjoyed many memorable achievements along the way. Highlights include winning the Collegiate Cup in 2005 in a tight match against Mercedes College. After entering the SAASL in 2006 the club claimed both Saturday Division 2 and Reserves titles (with the Reserves undefeated), as well as winning the Divisional Champions Trophy against Athelstone SC.
In 2008, the A’s captured the Premier Division title with a 2–0 win over St Peters on the final day, completing a remarkable season. That same year, the club achieved the double by defeating Elizabeth Vale 6–2 in the Champions of Champions Final. In 2015, the club added another proud moment as Saturday Division 1 Premier Reserves Champions.
Beyond trophies and results, the friendships formed through this club are truly special. While the club may be coming to an end, the connections and memories will continue and we know many of us will still catch up long after the final whistle.
To our volunteers your work is often thankless and without you the club simply wouldn’t have lasted this long. From working behind the bar, running the line, setting up on game day to cooking the BBQ, every effort mattered. To our life members, you will always hold a special place in the history and heart of the Adelaide Wanderers. Your commitment, loyalty and contribution over the years helped shape the club into what it became and will never be forgotten.
A very special thank you must also go to Daniel Caskie, President, for everything he has poured into the club over the past 15 years. As a player, committee member, club referee, and much more, Daniel has dedicated countless hours supporting and holding the club together. We cannot thank him enough for his commitment and passion.
Also big thank you to Coach Gregg Newman for everything he has done for the club. Since taking on the head coaching role four years ago, Gregg has gone above and beyond, not only as coach but also as a club sponsor, helping keep the club stable during that time. We are incredibly grateful for his hard work and commitment.
On a personal note, I’ve been involved with the club for 15 years and was lucky enough to captain the club and become a life member. It’s been an absolute honour. I’ve played with some amazing players over the years, many of whom I now call friends, and I hope you’ve enjoyed playing alongside me as much as I’ve enjoyed playing with you. The club has given me so much and created some incredible memories that I’ll never forget.
We know this is difficult news to read. To honour what has been an incredible journey, we invite everyone to join us at the Lockleys Hotel on Friday, February 27, 7pm to celebrate the Adelaide Wanderers Soccer Club. We encourage you to wear your club polo or colours as a tribute to nearly 40 years of memories, friendships and pride.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of this club’s story.
Kind regards,
Joseph Vella
