We humans evolved to run, so why can’t most people run without pain or injury?
As a species we have suffered a great deal of trauma - wars and other extreme acts of violence, industrial toxins, non-native EMF’s, nuclear weapons and especially the divergence from our natural way of life as hunter-gatherers. Over thousands of years these collective and even our personal traumas have induced a severe decline in physical capacity in our species. While this physical incompetence is now culturally accepted, it is not biologically normal.
The rate of knee and hip replacements are on the rise. Increasingly I hear of people being told by doctors or physiotherapists that they have ‘no problem’ yet are suffering from pain or mobility issues. As these issues increase, so do coping strategies and ‘therapies’ that just don’t quite address the root cause of the issues.
While there are exceptions to everything in life, when it comes to these movement dysfunctions, generally the issues can be found in the physics of movement - biomechanics. When you understand physics and human evolution, you can look at people and start to see what is causing their issues. Most importantly, when you see the body as a single system rather than as a list of symptoms, you broaden your perspective and can begin to address the body as a whole.
Here’s a video of my current gait assessment. Nowhere near where I need it to be, but far better than it has ever been. With the ongoing education and application of Functional Patterns protocols, I’m learning the physics of movement and how to apply it to the human organism. I’m addressing my dysfunctions, getting rid of pain and discomfort, dropping my coping mechanisms and finding much more clarity in my life. All this by optimising my running mechanics, which advertently ripples out to increasing movement capacity in all other movements.
