🧤 Tip of the Week – Goalkeepers handling the ball 🧤

Goalkeepers are generally permitted to handle the ball within their own penalty area. However, there are two important exceptions:

⚽ Receiving a deliberate pass from a teammate
⚽ Handling the ball again after releasing it before another player touches it

Both result in an indirect free kick to the opposition, with no yellow or red card issued.

🟨 Tip of the Week - Issuing Yellow Cards 🟨

When issuing Yellow Cards in the match, there are plenty of ✅Do’s and ❌Don’ts to keep in mind.

✅ Do use your whistle
✅ Do discourage others from approaching
✅ In situations where there is potential for retaliation or further misconduct, do show the yellow card straight away to defuse problems
✅ Do keep a distance (1m) between you and the player

❌ Do not run towards the player or show the card in an aggressive manner
❌ Do not touch a player to attract their attention
❌ Do not show the card to the player’s back or let the player run away before showing the card
❌ Do not place the yellow card right in front of the player’s face.
❌ Do not show the card to a player when they are amongst other players.

🚧 Tip of the Week - Technical Areas 🚧

Referees must work with the Team Managers to ensure that listed players and team officials/coaches are permitted within the technical area during fixtures.

❌Parents and other spectators must remain outside the designated area at all times.

✅Maintaining control of the technical area helps create a safe, professional, and respectful match environment for everyone involved. ⚽🟨

🚩 Tip of the Week – Using Your Assistant Referees (ARs)! 🚩

Hey new refs, listen up! When you're out there on the pitch, remember you don't have to make every call on your own if you have ARs. If you're ever unsure about a decision, consult your ARs.

When things get heated or contentious, don't rush. Take a moment, slow the game down, and talk it over with your ARs. Working as a team with your ARs ensures better, more accurate decisions.

Lean on your ARs, communicate clearly, and remember, you're all in this together. Make those decisions as a team and keep the game running smoothly! Teamwork makes the dream work!

If you don't have appointed ARs with you, ask the teams to supply someone and give them a brief rundown of your expectations of them as the Referee. Often they will also prove a valuable resource to assist you. ⚽

Tip of the Week – Kit Clash!

The two teams must wear colours that distinguish them from each other and the match officials 🔴🔵⚫

Each goalkeeper must also wear colours that are distinguishable from the other players and the match officials. If the two goalkeepers’ shirts are the same colour and neither has another shirt, the referee can allow the match to be played .

If a kit clash occurs in an NSFA Competition, it is the AWAY team that must wear its alternate strip. It is up to refs and teams be prepared for colour clashes [The NSFA Kit clash matrix is located on the NSFA Website]

Get your timing right! Sometimes matches need to be shortened. ⌚

We all know that there’s a busy schedule of games every week and to ensure a smooth flow of events, matches need to start and finish on time. It’s the referee’s job to make sure that happens.

What do you do if a match is running over❓
- Work out how long there is from your game’s kick off until the starting time of the next game
- Deduct 5-10 minutes for a gap between games.
- This gives you your available time.
- Allow 5 minutes for half time and split the time into 2 equal halves.
- Advise team managers of the changed playing time.

If all referees do this, every match will start on time and have a normal full-length game. That’s what every player wants! ✅
