Port Melbourne Trugo Club

Port Melbourne Trugo Club Why not get to know your neighbours over a game of Trugo. Trugo is a traditional Australian sport invented in the Newport Railway Workshops 100 years ago.

Open practice is first Tuesday of the month at 12PM. For more info just Email us! Port Melbourne Trugo Club was founded in 1953 as part of the Port Melbourne Community Centre in Edwards Park. Initially played as a social game for local retirees, Port Melbourne entered its first team into the Victorian Trugo Association in 1955. While appearing in many finals matches, it would not be until 2000 tha

t Port would win its first VTA Premiership. The game of Trugo is one of the few Australian heritage sports still played today. It emerged out of Melbourne's Newport Railway Workshops in the mid-1920s. While it initially focused on retired men's health and welfare it is now open to all ages with mixed teams of men and women. If you are interested in helping us preserve this unique Port Melbourne tradition either as a player or more generally please send us a message and we will bring you up to speed on one of Australia's most relaxed and enjoyable games.

Big Win for Port in Crucial Game

Port Melbourne 133 def South Melbourne Penguins 120

Thursday's game against the South Melbourne Penguins had a lot riding on it for both teams. For the Penguins a win would have secured them fourth spot on the ladder and a berth in the VTA First Semi-Final. A win for Port would keep their finals dreams alive for another week. Going into the game South were coming off a one point win against Yarraville and they were sitting relatively comfortably in fourth place on the ladder. There was clearly a sense they had enough momentum to pull this one off.

Port, on the other had lost their game to Brunswick but did have the home ground advantage. Port have had some good wins at home this season including against Yarraville, Footscray Doughnuts, Ascot Vale and Brunswick. The home courts can be tricky but this final home game showed they were masters of their domain with a season best score of 133.

Game highlights were Brian Jecks mighty 22 in the first half, and Julie Garland's 19 in the second half. Also very handy was David Radke and Brian Bethune reaching their 16 goal quota as back up players in the second half.

With one round to go Port have to get past an in form Footscray Doughnuts if they are to make the finals. However, Port will be hoping for a repeat of Round 9 when they defeated the Doughies by 3 points. Competition for the finals is going to be intense.

Port Melbourne @ The Australian Masters Games

While Port Melbourne did not have a team at the Australian Masters Games in Canberra we did have a representative in the Victorian All Stars, Julie Garland. The All Stars were made up of players from three VTA teams and it gave Julie a chance not only to compete as a team member but also go for individual glory in the singles.

In the first round Julie was ranked equal third and looked like a real chance for the Bronze, or perhaps something more glittery, but the courts were tough and unpredictable. Unfortunately, it all came down to one missed goal, poster, wide whatever it robbed Julie for this year. However, coming fourth was a great effort in what was a highly competitive competition for the women. We wish Julie all the best for the VTA season and look forward to seeing her take a medal at the next Masters.

Below left Julie with team mates Wendy, Adam and Rob in front of the Trugo Centenary banner. Right Julie searching for that one magical goal.

Countdown for the Australian Masters Games
Registrations Close this Friday, 19 SEPTEMBER, 5PM

OVER 40 REGISTRATIONS FOR TRUGO ALREADY!

Congratulations to everyone in our Trugo community, registrations have topped 40 with Canberra very much the place to be in October. There is a great female/male ratio so medals for the women's and men's singles will both be hotly contested.

There is still time to put a team together but the focus is on finding players for a few teams who are just missing 1 or 2 players. Our ACT team is just missing one, possibly two players so if you know someone in Canberra please give them the nudge. We also have a spot in the Victorian All Stars up for grabs male or female. NSW and Qld are good to go but if there are any more NSW players we do have another team. Individuals can play in the first two rounds for medals but we'll try and find those extra players first.

Time to get on the blower, knock on doors, start posting on your social media! See you in Canberra in October 25!

Beautiful Weather Brings Out the Trugo Players at Port Melbourne's Open Day

Last Sunday proved the perfect choice for our Open Day with beautiful weather inducing a relaxed family orientated day on the courts.

Many thanks to our neighbours Sandridge and Footscray from across the bridge for coming along and supporting the day.

Most importantly as we head towards the new season, it was great to get a few recruits. Yes, we still need more players! There's still plenty of time before the opening swing in the first week of October so please contact us if you think you might know someone who can play or you're reading this and are ready to take up the mallet. Remember, you can play a complete season, play six games or just come along for a trial game. The commitment is up to you.

Huge thanks to everyone at Port who assisted with the day, particularly, Julie Garland who helped get things going.

National Heritage Festival, Saturday 19 April
Trugo will be participating in the National Heritage Festival this April setting up courts at historic Ripponlea. It is not the normal haunt of Trugo players but as Trugo is gaining increasing recognition as part of Melbourne's rich intangible heritage it is appropriate for our game to be on display to a wider audience.
Details are on the poster below or you can visit the National Trust's web site:
