2018 ISC clash match worn guernsey: #16 David Mundy.

It took me a long time to get my hands on a David Mundy match worn, but I was very happy the day that I finally did.

Dave did it all over a long and storied career in Purple – 376 games, an AA, a Doig Medal, a season as captain, life membership, and a place in the WA Football Hall of Fame.

If Freo’s Mount Rushmore was built tomorrow, Mundy’s face would be on it.

Mundy started as a full-back, became a half-back, and then forged a long career as one of the league’s silkiest and underrated midfielders.

He was one of those guys who seemed to be able to make time on the footy field. Never flustered or hurried, and barely ever injured.

Mundy flew under the radar for so long that the club’s banner team produced one of the most underwhelming milestone banners in history, when it congratulated him on “250 solid games” in 2016.

But the latter portion of his career brought with it more acknowledgement of his achievements and by the time he went out in 2022 with 376 games to his name, Mundy was a known and greatly respected quantity across the league.

He may have played the 10th most games of any AFL footballer, but Mundy jumpers are not the easiest to find.

Many of them in the extremely impressive Freo collection of Erin Warwick.

This one carries particular weight. It was worn against Carlton in 2018, in Nat Fyfe’s 150th game.

Mundy had 20 touches and kicked a goal against the Blues that day, in a midfield mix which included Fyfe and the rising Lachie Neale serviced by Aaron Sandilands.

The game was #285 of Mundy’s career, and the jumper is matched to remnant blue stains near the number which came off the turf at Marvel that day.

2019 realestate.com.au™️ AFLX Flyers Gatorade Game Changer™️ player issue guernsey

The year was 2019, and the AFL’s executive suite was looking for a new way to make traditionalists audibly groan. A year earlier, the league had launched AFLX as a pre-season lightning carnival. Clubs played off in a modified rules tournament on a rectangular field. Innovations included the Zooper Goal™️ - a 10-pointer from long range - a silver footy, and 8-person teams. No one took it seriously, and Adelaide won the competition under the leadership of club legend Kyle Chaney.

What do you do with a failed concept? If you’re the AFL, you double down…

In 2019, the realestate.com.au AFLX™️ was relaunched as an all-stars style preseason event. Four teams were conceptualised - Nat Fyfe’s Flyers (purple), Jack Riewoldt’s Rampage (green), Eddie Betts’ Deadly (orange), and Patrick Dangerfield’s Bolt (blue).

The captains built squads from a pool of the league’s best available players, and the tournament was played in a carnival in February at Marvel Stadium.

Among the new innovations were a rock-paper-scissors ‘coin toss’, a PINK football (!!), and the Gatorade Game Changer™️ - special designation which was given to a player on each team in the final five minutes of the match.

The Gatorade Game Changer™️’s scores were worth double if they were wearing this special guernsey, meaning a single kick could be worth as much as 20 points.

Across the day for the Flyers, four players wore the Gatorade Game Changer™️ guernsey. They were Nat Fyfe, Isaac Heeney, Travis Boak and Marcus Bontempelli.

Stacked with talent, the Flyers won through to the grand final and were hot favourites, but went down to the Rampage after Jack Riewoldt scored a 20-pointer wearing the Gatorade Game Changer™️ guernsey for his team in the closing minute of the match.

AFLX was never played again.

Pictured is a 2019 player issue Gatorade Game Changer™️ guernsey. Unclear whether this one was worn on the day, but it shows signs.

I count this as part of my Freo collection because of the Fyfe link.

I also found evidence of 2 AFLX expansion teams we never got to see (see last video).

2004 Concept Sports Purple Haze player issue: #34 Paul Medhurst

Freo took manufacturing in-house for one season in 2004, via a company called Concept Sports.

It resulted in a set of jumpers which featured the club logo beneath the collar, instead of a manufacturer’s brand.

2003 was the last year of Russell Athletic, and Reebok took the job in 2005.

Both did a great job, but the 04 cleanskins were fully subbed and remain some of my favourite ever designs.

And this might top the list.

Fremantle played North Melbourne at Subiaco in its second ever Starlight Purple Haze fixture.

The game was won by North, and is best remembered for Daniel Wells’ incredible scissor-kick Goal of the Year which sealed their victory.

It broke my heart at the time.

But the jumper the Dockers wore that day was something else entirely.

The shade of purple was perfect, and was closely replicated in last year’s retro design.

The Freo logo gave just enough colour on the predominantly purple and white strip, and the Bankwest branding front and back was extremely of its time in WA.

This was the jumper design I nagged my mum to buy me in my last year of primary school, and that I wore to footy training all through high school.

It was the only jumper that ever I felt a tinge of sadness parting with, when I sold that retail version a few years ago.

And then this appeared out of nowhere, as an offer in a trade.

It’s a 2004 Paul Medhurst player issue, which appears to have been used as a sample jumper when they mocked up Reebok branded designs ahead of 2005.

The embroidered RBK branding has been picked out, returning it to what was worn against North that night (with a few small scars).

Medders won the goalkicking for Freo that year with 41, but didn’t manage any on the night from his 8 touches. I’m not sure if this was worn in the game, or if it was a spare.

Would love to find a few more of the 2004 designs one day.

2006 Reebok clash player issue long sleeve: #29 Matthew Pavlich

I can only remember one instance of Pav wearing long sleeves in his 353-game career. It wasn’t in 2006.

But a Pav is a Pav, and 2006 was just about the pinnacle for Fremantle in the anchor era.

This was the year things appeared to turn for the footy club. A nine-game winning streak had the Dockers finish in third place, with 15 wins.

The club had stared down the AFL in the aftermath of the infamous Sirengate fixture in Launceston, and won.

A grand final appearance was only a win away. A flag felt a lot closer than it ended up being.

Things were looking up for all us believers. And Matthew Pavlich was absolutely the heart of it all.

Pav was entering his prime, as a 25-year-old utility who was starting to settle into his role as a full-time forward as good as any in the league. 71 goals attests to this.

2006 brought with it a Doig Medal, a third leading goalkicker award, a fourth All-Australian, and Freo life membership.

The season was a lead-in to the captaincy, which was held from 2007 until the end of 2015 - a stint which gave Freo its only grand final appearance to date, and the phrase Wharfie Time.

On a team level in 2006, the club had its first taste of finals success - beating Melbourne at a packed Subiaco Oval.

I vividly remember the shake of the stands as the siren rang out that night.

They wore the home strip that day, and this is a clash. But I maintain the jumper set from 2006 looked as clean as any.

The pre-AFL branding chunky numbers were awesome.

The clash was striking, and I’m hoping we might see it as a retro design sometime soon.

To have one of Pav’s jumpers from that season is particularly special to me.

He was Freo’s greatest leader, and sits comfortably in the Australian Football Hall of Fame - the only person so far to spend their whole career at Freo and achieve that distinction in the club’s 31 years.

1998 Sekem home player issue: #31 James Clement

Drafted from South Fremantle, James Clement was a natural fit as a Docker but found his groove as a Magpie.

Clement made his debut as a defender in 1996, spending five seasons in purple. In 1998 he slipped out of the team, returning to momentarily reinvent himself as a mobile key forward. Clement kicked 5 goals in each of rounds 3 and 4 of 1998, against West Coast and Essendon respectively, and finished the year with 27 majors. He returned to the backline in 1999, but fell out of favour with Damian Drum in 2000 and was traded to Collingwood after 88 games.

At the Pies, Clement thrived. He won Copeland Trophies and All-Australian selections in 2004 and 2005 and was a reliable leader who stepped in as captain on several occasions in place of Nathan Buckley. Clement retired at the end of 2007, after 146 games for his second club. He returned to Freo as a board member from 2019 until early last month, and has forged a successful career as a business executive at ASX-listed Vysarn.

For all his achievements, one-fifth of Clement’s 51 career goals were kicked in that two-week block back in 1998 - the year this jumper comes from. More than half his career tally came that season.

The pictured jumper is a James Clement player issue, with some serious wear on its inside. Very difficult to conclusively photo match in this era. regardless, it’s a gem from the footy club’s formative years.

2022 Sekem unworn white anchor training jumper: #24 Jye Amiss

Another mystery training jumper. Not quite as mysterious as the last one I posted, but a cool one all the same.

These showed up in two unworn sets at the 2023 Locker Room Sale - white on purple, and purple on white.

It’s not clear why they were never worn. But they were made for the players at the beginning of 2022, and the club opted for some reason against using them.

The design appears to be inspired by the original home and away jumpers, before sublimating allowed for a more defined anchor - think 1995-1997, but in different colour schemes to what was worn back then.

When writing the book in 2024, we decided to include them in the odds and ends section at the back and they got a bit of traction online - see Mim’s tweet above.

Wearing 24 in 2022 was the rookie Jye Amiss, who had been drafted with pick 8 in the previous year’s draft.

Amiss was still a kid and grappled with injury in his first season, playing just 3 games. He debuted in round 8, had a long lay-off, then remarkably made his way back into the side for the elimination final against the Bulldogs and the semi final against Collingwood.

He’s gone on to become a mainstay of the Dockers team, and having bulked up considerably he’s has had a really strong season so far in 2026.

2023 Moorditj long sleeve Western Derby match worn: #11 James Aish

Fremantle’s biggest ever win over its cross-town rivals came in round 22 of 2023.

The 101-point belting was a one-sided affair, and I don’t think anyone from either side would ever go back and watch the tape.

Freo kicked 17 unanswered goals that day.

But a record is a record. And this was the only Freo longy to take the field.

Wearing it, Aish had 21 disposals and kicked the final goal of his AFL career (see video).

The jumper is a 2023 long sleeve Moorditj jumper, with a heat-pressed Hostplus logo on the upper chest.

Hostplus appeared on Freo jumpers late in 2023 and only once on the Moorditj jumper, in the derby win.

With South Australian footy royalty in his blood, Aish was a footy prodigy who had won two SANFL flags for Norwood before he was old enough to drink a beer.

He was drafted early by Brisbane, where he played 32 games to start his career, then traded to the Pies for a 50-game stint.

Aish was a dependable utility by the time he arrived at Freo in 2020 with coach Justin Longmuir, who he had worked with at Collingwood.

At Freo, Aish slotted in nicely. 104 games over six seasons, before retiring at the end of 2025.

Aish also kinda looked like a pirate.

2025 Sekem Indigenous All Stars game match worn: #16 Murphy Reid

The decades-old Indigenous All Stars concept was revived in February 2025, after a long absence.

A team of the best Indigenous talent from across the country was selected to play Fremantle in a game at Optus Stadium on February 15 - a game which marked the beginning of the pre-season.

To commemorate the occasion Freo went back to the future, wearing a remake of its 2013 Indigenous jumper designed by the great Roger Hayden and Richard Walley.

Dockers veteran Michael Walters captained the All Stars, in what proved to be his last game at the level.

Meanwhile, Fremantle fans got their first look at something pretty special.

The game was Murphy Reid’s very first in purple. And this is his first game worn jumper.

Reid slid pick 17 in the 2024 AFL draft, and had raised eyebrows in the preseason for his slick hands and game sense.

He would go on to kick four goals in his official debut in round 1, and win the Rising Star after playing every game of his rookie year.

His star is still rising, and with every game now it feels like he gets a little bit better.

But on that day at Optus he was just a rookie looking to get a kick. From 52% game time, Reid had 7 disposals as the Dockers went down by 43 points.

The match worn jumpers were auctioned off at the time.

Reid’s was among the cheapest, and I was pleased to pick it up for the design alone.

Very thankful now that I did.

2020 ISC Indigenous match worn: #43 Michael Frederick

Collecting’s a funny game. Sometimes things fall into your lap, and other times designs can elude you for years.

This beautiful jumper falls into the latter for me. Designed by Antoni Grover and his sisters, it’s a striking purple number on the glossy late ISC template.

The jumper was worn in a memorable game against Sydney that year, and match worns were sold at auction.

When collectors got to the sale that year, there were none on the shelves.

It turned out whatever jumpers were left after the auction were sent to the Kimberley, where they were worn in Freo’s Indigenous programs.

So began the search. It took six years until this one randomly appeared on a resale site this year.

That was a good day.

Michael Frederick was playing game number 6 against Sydney that night in 2020, having been drafted with pick 61 in the offseason.

He kicked a goal from 9 touches - the third of his career - wearing the number 43.

Now wearing 32, Frederick arrived as a speculative pick but has become a strong performer at Freo over the years and more than 100 games since.

He’s speedy, strong in a contest and an accurate shot on goal - a hard worker who has embraced one of the tougher roles in footy; that of the high half-forward.

A great jumper from the first Longmuir season, and the Covid impacted season of 2020.

2014 ISC away match worn: #7 Nat Fyfe

Nat Fyfe’s peers recognised him as the best player in the game in 2014, ahead of Gary Ablett and Lance Franklin.

Fyfe was 22, and had the world at his feet.

He was aerially elite, bullishly strong at the contest and brave to a fault.

Peak Fyfe didn’t dominate the competition for a decade, like Bont or Danger. He didn’t win the flags or Norms like Dusty.

Over his career, Fyfe won 3x AA blazers and 3x B&Fs.

While he played 15 seasons, injuries meant Fyfe’s time at the game’s summit was shorter than his esteemed peers.

The body wasn’t always able to do what the mind wanted it to.

But I believe peak Fyfe had them all covered. I have never seen another player like him, and I’m not sure I ever will.

In 2014 Fyfe was at the top of his game, averaging 27 touches a game and booting 24 goals from the midfield.

He would have won a Brownlow that year if not for suspension, which rubbed him out for 4 games.

Even without those games to poll in, he finished second in the count to the winner Matt Priddis.

Fyfe won his first Brownlow a year later, and a second Leigh Matthews Trophy. He won a second Brownlow in 2019.

It was the golden boy’s golden era.
