The 18th of August each year is celebrated by Vietnam Veterans as Long Tan Day. On this day in 1966, 18 young Australians lost their lives on the battlefield after a prolonged and fierce battle. In 2004, Wayne Cross and a group of Vietnam Veterans who play golf at the Altone Park Golf Course in Beechboro decided to hold an 18 hole 2 ball Ambrose Event. ry year since then usually on the Thursday before Long Tan (or Vietnam Veterans Day) on the 18th August. The event was primarily designed for Vietnam Veterans but all war veterans and peacekeepers/peacemakers are welcome to participate. Whilst not veterans also participate and are eligible to win the first place prizes, the first Vietnam Veteran pair receives the trophies. Until 2007 the event was held at Altone Park Golf Course but was moved to Hillview Golf Course (Maida Vale) in 2008 to better cater for the increased field. It was returned to Alton Park Golf Course in 2012
The event is a non-profit event with the nomination fee covering green fees, lunch and prizes. As such we have relied on donations from various sources to help us. Whilst the group of veterans who originally organised the day they have now handed the organisation of the event to Partners of Veterans Association Western Australia Inc.
