A lot of players ask if Cricket Bats made wth Maple, Oak & Ash are more powerful than Willow Bats.
Ball exit speed from a Bat is determined by many factors including bat weight, player swing speed, the level of pressing applied to the bat during manufacture, the rigidity of the connection between the bat handle and the bat blade, ball travel speed to the bat, where on the bat impact is made with the ball, the ball impact time frame, the atmosphere, cellular structure of the timber and more.
By nature timbers such as Maple, Oak and Ash are harder (Janka Rating) than Willow. Therefore in the natural state Maple,Oak and Ash will hit the ball harder. However, Willow Blades are pressed during the manufacturing process and thus the surface of the blade is mechanically hardened. The ball exit speed from Willow Bats, in a broad sense, depends on the level of pressing applied and the method used to press. It will also be affected by when the bat was pressed prior to use. We cannot test every Willow Bat in the world so we cannot conclude or state that Maple Bats, Oak Bats and Ash Bats hit the ball harder that Willow Bats.
Willow also has a diffuse poros cell structure which effects its resistance to impact shock. The effects of this on ball exit speed from the bat is another factor to be considered when comparing alternate timbers suitable for use on Bats.
We have opted to offer Bats made using alternate timber to Willow for a number of reasons. These reasons include:
Availability
Quality
Durability
Price
The price of Cricket Bats has increased dramatically in recent years. Players now need to pay around $1500 AUD for a top quality Willow Bat. A mid range Willow bat is around $600 AUD. A top quality Maple Bat or Oak Bat or Ash Bat will cost consumers around the same price as a mid range Willow Bat. A good quality Maple, Oak or Ash Bat will cost somewhere between $250 AUD to $450 AUD.
Cricket Bats Equipment wise, particularly with bats and bat handles, cricket has not seen any major innovations for years. Bat shapes have changed, they have become thicker but in terms of the materials used to manufacture them not a lot has changed. Compared to other sports like golf, baseball and....
