Who or what is a Roobee?
The 50 Years of Flight logo is a reimagined version of the Roobeeโฆ.the much loved Australian Frisbee Association logo from the โ80โs.
In late 1980, flying disc sports in Australia were being driven from Frisbee HQ, a home office at 11 Lambert Rd, Caulfield, Victoria, where Mark Powers and Brian Allen were working as full time Frisbee professionals, generously funded by Toltoys.
The Roobee designer was a chap called Dik Browne. Homeless Dik was found at the local park, sitting on a bench, feeding the birds. Mark was always up for a chat and finding out that Dik was an artist and looking for a place to stay, Mark invited him back to Frisbee HQ.
Over the next few days Dik regaled everyone with his many adventurous stories, including he was once the artist for the Hagar the Horrible cartoon. Dik put his pens to work to draw artwork for the Australian Delay, the AFAโs Newsletter, plus design the Square Disc Award logo (future story) and the illustrious Roobee.
Then one day Dik was gone. And so was the petty cash tin. Payment for services rendered maybe? Dik disappeared but the Roobee remained and graced magazines, membership cards, t-shirts and Frisbees for several years.
To design the modern reimagined version of Roobee we turned to a local Perth artist who isnโt homeless, but rather a champion of the people and disc golfer, Carl Bellesini. Great work Carl.
Nice to see you again Roobee.
