With the tragic passing of Neale Daniher this week, Wembley Vets Football Club paid its respects with a minute’s silence before our scratch match last night.
There was a lot of reflection in that silence. Neale holds a close place in the heart of the Wembley Vets community, as one of our own is his son.
It also gave us a chance to reflect on the impact Motor Neurone Disease has on families and communities across Australia. Every day in Australia, two people are diagnosed with MND and two people lose their life to the disease. Around 2,800 Australians are currently living with MND.
More importantly, it allowed us to reflect on the extraordinary work Neale, alongside his family and the wider community, was able to achieve. Through FightMND, more than $140 million has been raised for research, awareness, clinical trials and support programs for Australians living with MND.
On the field, Neale represented everything great about footy — mateship, resilience, courage and unwavering effort. Off the field, he became one of Australia’s greatest examples of determination and selflessness, taking on “The Beast” with a bravery@ that inspired an entire nation.
Neale reflects everything Wembley Vets the wants to stand for: mateship, perseverance in the face of challenges, and a commitment to making an impact when most would shy away.
Here’s to Neale — a legend of the game, but an even bigger legend of Australia.
