Kids can either stay home and game all day or they can go out and do whatever.

I'd much rather have my kids go fishing when they're out and about.

I see too many kids getting into trouble when they don't have any interests or anything they're interested in.

Lots of people also whinge about ebikes but when kids can grab a rod and hop on their ebike for a sesh then they're doing something they like doing AND they're staying out of trouble.

An unweighted hook cast out around structure is a great tactic for catching all sorts of Australian fish. Bream, trevally, salmon, and it you let it sink to the bottom there's even more species down there.

I like a #2 hook without any weight on a 7ft medium action rod like the Bream reaper Travel rod. Line size is usually 8 to 10 pound line for me.

Let it sink and drift with the current naturally. Once the line starts taking off pull up on the line to set the hook.

Prawn, pillies, bread, squid are common baits. I prefer prawn but pilies are pretty good at catching fish.

Using Live Bait Under a Float for Kingfish: Old School Meets Big Hook-Ups

If you’ve ever seen a float disappear in a puff of bubbles and seconds later your rod loads up — you already know the thrill.

Float fishing with live yakka is still one of the deadliest ways to target kingfish from the rocks, jetties, or harbour walls across Australia. It keeps your livie in the strike zone longer, avoids snags, and gives you that sweet visual bite you never forget.

Want to try it yourself?

All you need is: ✔ A slip float with float stops
✔ Small ball sinker + swivel
✔ A metre of leader
✔ A sharp hook + a fresh yakka
✔ And a bit of patience...

💡 Tip: Use a bead under your sinker to protect your knot — kingies hit hard and weak knots don’t survive long.

Went out with Jacob a couple days ago for some Kingfish and yakka. Didn't connect with any Kingies but we got plenty yakka. Jacob panko coated his feed and it looks tasty as.
