OUR HISTORY
It was 1975 and a group of girls who were playing netball in the Queensland Catholic Netball Assoc (QCNA) night fixtures (in 3 different teams) decided that they wanted to play day fixtures. The decision was to go and play with the Brisbane Netball Assoc (BNA) Chermside. The uniform was Bottle Green Skirt and their emblem was, bird wings and a ball in the middle, this was on the co
rner of the skirt, and a Cream Shirt. After 2 years playing Division 1 at BNA and winning the Grand Final they decided to move to Downey Park Netball Assoc. Once they registered their team they were advised that they could not have the name Wings, as there was a team playing called Goldwings. The girls liked the name Wings and also the emblem plus it was on the playing skirt, so it was decided after hours of talk and a few drinks, to keep the name Wings but in another language. We all had to go off and ask friends and ring a few Consulates, at another short meeting – All agreed Flugel was a good name. FLUGEL is German for WINGS
From 1977 to the present day Flugel have been playing at Downey Park except for one year when the team went to Metropolitan Districts Netball Assoc. The first season at Downey Park the team was not allowed to play in A Grade (Div 1) but played Reserve Grade (Div 2) We lost the Grand Final but the following year played in A Grade. Over the years many senior girls played in one or two Flugel Teams, the players were always from QCNA State/Rep players. The first team always in A Grade. In 1990 (most of the old girls were still involved, playing umpiring) it was decided to expand, and use Flugel as a building team for junior players for Qld Catholic. So for the 1991 day season we got our daughters, friend’s daughters and school mates and formed 4 Junior and 4 Senior Teams. Our uniform changed slightly for a couple of years, then to our present day uniform and so began the building of the Flugel Club. In 1996 the Club became Incorporated. In 2016, at the 20 year anniversary of Flugel Netball Club Inc. after a period of membership decline, the decision was made to offer the idea of a name change for the club to the current membership. At the 2016 AGM, the proposal to change the name from Flugel to Brisbane Central Flyers was put to the vote, with over 75% or members voting for the new name. The new name identifies that the club is based in inner city Brisbane, providing an immediate pull to potential members and parents living or working within this area, and the identifier “Flyers” links the club with its heritage and current identity while also providing young girls with an easy to remember and exciting name to tell friends. In October 2016, the club name was officially changed to Brisbane Central Flyers Netball Club Inc. CLUB MOTTO
