Born in Lombok, Indonesia, Usman moved to Desert Point as a child.

He began surfing at age 10 and at age 12 was tube riding and showed his natural talent.

Soon became an expert tube rider. He had a quick progress in his maneuver surfing and start on local competitions in the local circuit.
