We've officially moved into our new home at Hurstville Public School!

Thank you Hurstville Public School for welcoming us and for giving us the opportunity to continue our kendo journey in such a fantastic space.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported Kenbukan Kendo's growth. What started as a small group has grown into a wonderful community, and this move gives us the space to continue learning, challenging ourselves, and building friendships through kendo.
We're looking forward to creating many new memories together in our new dojo.

After two and a half years, Kenbukan Kendo is saying goodbye to Mortdale Community Centre and moving on to a new home at Hurstville Public School.

It's a bittersweet one. Mortdale community centre is where Kenbukan started, where a lot of us picked up a shinai for the first time, pushed through tough but rewarding sessions, and slowly turned into the group we are now.
For our last training there, we had fun with an interactive warm up, challenged ourselves with two rounds of kirikaeshi party, and then shared food afterward to sit down together, walk down memory lane, and reflect on and celebrate the journey we've had so far.

Thank you everyone for being yourselves and bringing so much laughter and good energy into our lives (especially as we trauma bond via kirikaeshi party😏).

A special thank you to Takayama Sensei for the mentorship and support in building this club, and to our instructors for turning up week after week with so much patience, always giving your time to help the rest of us improve.
Thanks also to the Georges River Council and the Mortdale community for having us all these years and giving us a place to call home.
We're sad to leave, but we're excited for what's next. So, hello, Hurstville public school! Looking forward to our next chapter and all the memories still to come!

In Kendo, we use a sliding footwork called suriashi. Suriashi keeps you connected to the floor so you can move, attack, defend, and change direction quickly without losing balance or posture.

Though many may think kendo is mainly about the shinai, strong kendo usually comes from the feet first.
Good suriashi might not look flashy, but it’s one of the biggest foundations of higher level kendo.

2026 May State Grading

Incredibly proud of everyone. Not just because everyone passed, but because of what it took to get there. The commitment to consistent training, the small improvements each session that slowly added up.

Arriving early, warming up together, and looking out for one another showed something more than just preparation.

Shows the willingness to be your best, by sharing your best.

Becoming leaders not just in your own life, encouraging others to do the same.

Feeling so blessed to be able to walk with you on this journey.

Congratulations!

Looking forward to learnings ahead!

Our last training of the year was held on 15 December 2025. even with many already on holidays, we had an awesome turnout for our final session!

For the first time at Mortdale, we ran a kirikaeshi party! Everyone pushed through, brought their spirit, and gave it everything they had. A great reminder of how much we’ve grown this year physically, mentally, and spiritually. Really proud of everyone!

We also wrapped up the year with an end-of-year dinner. Huge thank you to Nadia and Sally for organising everything, and for the surprise birthday as well!

Looking back, this year has been a year of transition, from seeing our beginners grow into our very first bogu group to reshaping our intermediate classes and coaching structure. While many things changed, one thing never did. The passion, consistency, and genuine support everyone showed for each other stayed strong throughout the year, and that has been the heart of everything we’ve built together.

I’m really excited about what we have planned for the new year. Revamped beginners course and a revised senior training mapping.

Rest up, and enjoy the break!
We restart training on 15 January 2026, with a new beginners course starting on 16 February 2026. Really excited for what’s ahead. Let’s keep pushing forward together!

On 1st November 2025, some of our members headed to the NSW State Grading held at the University of Sydney.

We are so proud of the commitment and consistency that you have put into your training!

What stood out most wasn’t just the results, but the way carried themselves: Warming up together, kept focused, and even those who wasn't grading came to support thier mates. Really looked the most organised group out there! Seeing the teamwork and spirit was amazing!

We hope the experience gave you confidence, new insights, and even more motivation for the journey ahead. Let’s bring that energy back to training!!
