Surfing Super League is coming to the Coast in 2028. 8 local teams including 1 from the Sunshine Coast. Surfing now attracts millions into the Sunshine Coast economy, without 1 expense or impact to ratepayers, residents, marine life or the beach environment. The blue economy is barely given a thought here on the Sunshine Coast, but it should be a prime focus. How do we protect the waves, how do we preserve our beaches so we have surf beaches & how do we ensure sand movement has natural progression essential in wave formation? Beach management & coastal management needs to incorporate this into studies like surf impact studies we’ve been pushing for years. Maybe now there is the potential of so much money & global focus from this event being televised around the world, we may see the shift in coastal management we’ve been asking for.

A moody start to a beautiful day down here at the beach.
A little overcast, but lots of smiles on the sand. Thanks to Ben the council beach groomer for doing a great job super early this morning & always with a smile on his face helping to get our beaches ready for business, ready for our residents & visitors to enjoy.
Not much litter at Alex today thankfully. A great start to the day.

The whale migration is now underway along our coastline!

Over the coming months, we will likely see whales travelling close to shore, and unfortunately some may become entangled in shark control gear or strand on our beaches.

In an emergency, knowing who to call can make all the difference. Confusion over the correct contact number can delay the critical response needed to help these animals.

Seawalls, sand pumping are breakwaters not the answer to nourishing and saving beaches we all know that, but what IS the solution?

Artificial reefs are working, undercurrent stabilisers are known to work - both cost significantly less than all these dredging & seawall projects AND are long-term solutions to drawing sand onto beaches & building them up naturally, so why are council coastal engineers not looking at or modelling these?

I came across this video prepared by another group in the USA years ago.

While we definitely don’t subscribe to geotextiles at all - we shouldn’t be using them as they are pollutants, the undercurrent stabilisers definitely have credit & artificial reefs now done really well do too!

It’s high tide we looked at implementing them. (No pun intended).

Instead of slugging ratepayers extra rates or getting grants on $40m seawall projects or 1/2 a million a year sand pumping activities - let’s work out how and where we can do this!

Now the sand movement study has been completed, we should be able to see where the coffee rock shelves are, where sand & the ocean naturally flows, wind movement, and where reefs are etc and pinpoint where best an artificial reef or undercurrent stabilises can work best.

See you on Sunday at the rally from 8am (ends 9am). We need as many people there as possible to get the message through to council it’s time to stop all the excessive spending on things that don’t work & are only making our beaches more fragile.
