Japan Karate Association - JKA SKC Thornbury JKA caters for people from all different cultural backgrounds, from ages of 6yrs and up. We also provide separate classes for child & adults.

At Japan Karate Association (JKA), we teach martial arts as part of a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle. The classes are disciplined, but friendly. The programs are designed to cover the required curriculum in a positive environment. JKA Thornbury have separate children, teenagers & adult classes. Our program is designed to develop your co-ordination, quicken reflexes, and build stamina. Furthermore, it will enhance your self-esteem, leadership skills and confidence at the same time. The rewards of karate are numerous. In our everyday lives we often forget the values of exercise to both our physical and mental health. In this, karate is a life long journey. It is an activity in which advancing age is not a hindrance. Rather it encourages proficiency in the keen co-ordination of mind and body. Shotokan Karate, as a self defence is one of the most dynamic of all the martial arts. It is also the most widely practiced karate style in the world. The trained karate-ka will have the ability to co-ordinate mind and body, thereby, can unleash tremendous physical power at will. In November 2025, John Marinovic, Colin McIntosh, and Sergiy Mykhaylenko successfully attained their Yondan (4th Dan) grading. Today they have been given their JKA certificate.
All three commenced their karate journey as young teenagers and have remained dedicated members of the club for many years. Throughout that time, they have been outstanding club members, generously assisting with instruction, mentoring junior students, and contributing significantly to the development of our dojo.
In addition to their commitment to teaching, each enjoyed considerable success as tournament competitors during their competitive years, representing the club and for Australia.
Achieving Yondan is a significant milestone that reflects decades of dedication, perseverance, and service to karate. Oss!

After 11 years of dedicated training, Archer Mezencev has been awarded his JKA Shodan Certificate. Throughout his karate journey, Archer has been a great student.
He has proudly represented his club, state, and country in competition, always conducting himself with respect both on and off the tatami. In addition to his own training and achievements, Archer generously gives back to the dojo by assisting with instruction and helping develop younger students.
His technical standard, of karate have set a benchmark for others to follow.
Congratulations, Archer, on earning your JKA Shodan. We are looking forward to seeing what you can accomplish in the years ahead. Oss!

The Karate Victoria annual presentation and dinner was held last Saturday night. I could only imagine how much work and organising had to of been done. Thank you Muzaffer, Aash, Frank Poci and Anna Poci. The event looked great. A couple of photos including Oscar and Harvey receiving awards.
