Found Australia-wide, the Red Back Spider will live almost anywhere, as long as there is adequate food and it is warm enough to breed.

Once established, the Red Back will rarely leave its web, which is usually tucked away in a sheltered location.

The Red Back Spider’s main predators are the Daddy Long Legs spider and the White-tailed spider.

Over the summer months, Red Back Spider bites occur frequently. Although many bites are ineffective due to the size of their small jaws, some can cause serious illness and in some cases death.

During the summer months it is advised to be cautious and alert while outdoors. If bitten, apply an ice pack to the affected area, attempt to retrieve the spider and seek medical attention.

UNICOLOR Fact Friday! 🦌

The Megaloceros was a giant species of deer than inhabited most of the European continent and parts of Asia.

The species was coined ‘The Irish Elk’ as there were vast amounts of bones found in bogs across Ireland. This is despite the species not being limited to Ireland or even closely related to the Elk species as we know it today.

The Megaloceros stood at approximately 2.1m (6.11ft) at the shoulder and carried the largest antlers of any known deer, spanning a maximum of 3.65m (12.0ft) and weighing 40kg!

Considered the third-largest known deer to have ever existed, its weight was between 400-700kg depending on age and s*x.

It’s closest living relative today, is the well known Fallow deer, although there are theories that the species shared a resemblance with todays Reindeer while also sharing similar proportions to an antelope.

Additionally, it is also believed that the Megaloceros was an excellent runner.

It is estimated that the last of the ‘Irish Elk’ roamed earth approximately 14,500 - 27,500 years ago.

Wild animals are generally creatures of habit. A perfect example of this are game trails.

Time and time again, animals will walk over the same route, forming a well-used trail used by more than just one species.

These pathways sometimes circle back into each other, forming their own ‘road’ network in the forest. Game trails often lead to bedding or sleeping areas, watering/wallowing areas and feeding/hunting grounds.

From the perspective of a hunter, a game trail is the perfect hunting route, as the hunter has a clear path to carefully walk the forest, on the very same path used by animals they seek.

UNICOLOR Fact Friday! 🦌

Originally from Iran, Southern Europe and North Africa, the Fallow Deer is now found on every continent. 🌍

Amongst the smaller of the deer species, a buck can grow up to 1m tall while a doe can grow to 85cm tall.

Fallow deer have an annual breeding season known as ‘The Rut’ which generally lasts 5-9 weeks during autumn. During this period of heightened s*xual activity the bucks will call to the does with a ‘croaking’ sound.

The males can get quite territorial and somewhat aggressive towards one another during this period, unlike the rest of the year when the bucks tend to form small bachelor herds.

Vinnie knocked this young stag early in the morning with his gorgeous 300 Weatherby Magnum. Before gutting and preparing the animal, Vinnie radio’d Nick, a newcomer to the sport so he could show Nick first-hand how to prepare the animal for butchering in the field.

We captured some ripper action shots! This is what it’s all about. 👏

UNICOLOR Fact Friday! 🦌

Named after the tuft of black hair on its forehead, the Tufted Deer is found mainly in the south and east of China.

Inhabiting forest areas near supplies of fresh water, this species settles itself approx 500-4500 meters above sea level 🏔. A predominantly solitary animal, it can also be found in pairs. The Tufted deer can easily be disturbed and when alarmed it will let out a sound similar to a traditional ‘bark’.

The males have large fang-like canines that can grow up to 2.5cm (1inch) long and in some rare cases even longer. 🦷

There are approximately 400,000-600,000 of these animals remaining in the wild.
