What a great night! 🐴❤️

A huge thank you to Tori Jeffress for joining us for another sold-out Neigh Night and giving us so much to think about with The Functional Horse: Movement That Matters.

I think a lot of us walked away looking at our horses a little differently!

One of the things that really stuck with me was just how much the body tells a story. Something that looks like an isolated joint issue, a training problem, reluctance to go forward or even a behavioural issue might actually be part of a much bigger picture.

Tori talked us through how the spine, muscles, fascia, thoracic sling and nervous system all work together, and what can happen when a horse simply isn’t physically strong enough for what we’re asking of them. The body finds another way, and those compensations can start showing up in posture, movement, muscle development and even behaviour.

We also talked about the difference between putting a horse into a shape and actually developing the strength and posture that allows them to carry themselves properly. There were definitely a few lightbulb moments around the room! 💡

Thank you to everyone who came along, asked questions and packed out the room yet again. These are exactly the conversations we wanted Neigh Nights to create - horse people coming together, asking questions and hopefully heading home understanding our horses just a little bit better. ❤️

And next up…

Your horse is not your therapist... Part 2.

Yesterday I shared a post about the importance of finding ways to regulate your nervous system, to learn and grow as a person so you can be more mindful in your horse's presence.

I promised to share parts of my life away from horses, and what helps me to find my own centre and "calm".

Something that most people don't know about me is that I have spent my lifetime enjoying singing in the quiet of my own shower.
That was until one day, in a moment of bravery, I booked myself into a singing lesson.

When I arrived for my first lesson, I was so nervous I contemplated not even getting out of the car... then when I finally managed to drag myself from the car and into Al's studio, I started wondering if any sound was even going to be able to come out of my mouth with the butterflies occupying my tummy.

But here we are 2 years later, and I am still enjoying weekly lessons with Al.

Going to lessons with Al is like meditating for me. It brings a feeling of calm while also challenging me.

Al has become more than a singing teacher; she is also a friend, and we spend as much time laughing and talking as we do singing.

Stay tuned for part 3!

What do you do in your life away from horses that helps you to feel more peace?

Your horse isn't your therapist; they are your mirror... and that's hard;

It's hard not to have expectations.

It's hard not to let a bad ride with your horse ruin the rest of your day.

It's hard not to let fear of what could go wrong, or memories of past experiences, make you react abruptly.

It's hard to concentrate when your mind is focused on all the jobs you have to do today, this week, next month.

It's hard to bring the most stripped-away, authentically you version of yourself to your horse.

I used to rely on my horse to help regulate my emotions; I used to have high expectations...
But now, for the most part, I leave my problems and expectations at the gate and encourage my students to do the same. (Don't worry, they will still be there later and they can wait until then!)

Our horses work with us best when we are mindful, not when our minds are full!

So here is your homework-
Next time you are working with your horse, be nothing but in that moment... channel your inner Buddha
You are not your problems, you are not your expectations, you are not your to-do list.

Everyone's story is different, and for most of my students who don't know me outside of horses, it may look as though training horses and coaching people with their horses is my life.
But really, it's balancing my life and working on my own nervous system away from horses and my students that has allowed me to keep working with horses and people as the most "chill" version of myself I can be.

So what can you use as therapy if you can't rely on your horse to fix all of your problems?
Honestly, it can be anything that brings you joy, peace, calm or challenges you to be a better version of yourself.

Over the next few days, I will share some of the things that challenge me to grow as a person and do better.

What brings you joy, peace, calm or challenges you to be a better version of yourself that isn't horse-related?

You might be wondering about the photo above... Things like the above ussually happen with my sister. As much as we drive each other crazy, she is one of my best friends. There is always alot of giggling, dressing up in silly things and smiles when we are together.

Two years ago, I was just shy of midway through the Australian Brumby Challenge with a beautiful Kosciosko mare, "Nova".

After the Brumby Challenge, Nova took up residence with a very kind older man. To this day, she still spends her days roaming with her TB friend, "Seb," and getting fed endless carrots!

Super Excited to be presenting again this year at the Horsemanship Showcase, Leighton Buzzard, UK.

I'm looking forward to reuniting with familiar faces, particularly my four-legged friend "Teddy" and his owner, Julie. Teddy was my demonstration horse at last year's showcase, and will be filling those shoes again this year.

I also look forward to connecting with new like-minded horse lovers.

If you haven't already, book your tickets and accommodation; it's sure to be a great event!
