β€οΈ π Tony Podesta Cup 2026 π ππ
What a fantastic day of tennis, community, and team spirit as players from Smash Tennis and Tony Tennis came together to contest the inaugural Tony Podesta Cup.
The event was proudly renamed in honour of Tony Podesta, recognising his outstanding service, passion, and commitment to tennis. Tony was a strong advocate for collaboration, community, and creating opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. Together with Ricky, he helped establish the original Challenge Cup concept in 2014, creating a unique team tennis environment that brought players together, built friendships, and strengthened the local tennis community.
The Tony Podesta Cup showcased exactly what can happen when two like-minded clubs and coaching programs share the same vision for grassroots tennis. In an environment where genuine community-based team tennis has become increasingly rare, the day served as a reminder of how powerful sport can be when the focus is on participation, friendship, development, and healthy competition.
Throughout the day we witnessed outstanding tennis, incredible sportsmanship, plenty of team pride, and countless moments that reflected the true spirit of community tennis. New friendships were formed, old friendships were renewed, and players united in an atmosphere that celebrated the game we all love.
Congratulations to Smash Tennis, who took home the Cup this year following their long-awaited return to Challenge Cup competition, having last contested the event in 2018.
A special mention must go to Alvin and Jarrod, who competed in the original Challenge Cup as Red and Orange Ball players and this year stepped onto the court in the Open Division. Their journey is a wonderful example of what strong junior development pathways can achieve and highlights the long-term impact that quality grassroots programs can have on young players.
Thank you also to Ingleburn Tennis Club for providing us yet again with a beautifully maintained facility in which we could enjoy the tennis.
We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the Podesta Family, who joined us to celebrate the return of this special event and honour Tony's legacy. It was fitting to see the Cup brought back in recognition of someone who dedicated so much of his life to growing tennis, connecting people, and creating opportunities for others.
The Tony Podesta Cup is about far more than a trophy. It is a celebration of community, collaboration, friendship, and the positive impact that tennis can have when people work together towards a shared vision.
This is what grassroots tennis should look like.
