Today Aggie and Marnie Lynne came for a final tuneup before they head over the water for the National Interschool Championships in Victoria.

We wish them and the entire Tassie Team the best of luck, safe travels and enjoy the experience. For many of them, itโ€™s the first time travelling horses across Bass Strait and competing out of our state.

I wanted to take this photo with Chloe Lyne in it as along with Aggie itโ€™s been a really big journey getting Frankie prepared post a heavy knock to his leg XC at PC Trials. Working with vets to prepare a rehab program, then a return to ridden work program and a map to have him physically and mentally ready and we got there! Chloe and Aggie have done a great job and we have loved being part of the team.

GOODLUCK guys ๐Ÿดโค๏ธ๐Ÿดโค๏ธ

A young horse is diagnosed with an OCD lesion.

For the breeder or owner, those words can feel very final.

But what if they donโ€™t have to be?

One of the most interesting things about developmental orthopaedic disease is that

Dr Frances Peat and colleagues followed a large population of Thoroughbred yearlings and examined how radiographic findings changed as the horses matured. The findings were fascinating

Some lesions resolved. Some remained unchanged.
Some progressed.

That is important because a single yearling X-ray is essentially a snapshot of a developing skeleton, rather than necessarily reflecting the significance or progression of a finding as the horse matures.

This does not mean:

โ€˜Donโ€™t worry about abnormalities on X-rays.โ€™ Nor does it mean: โ€˜Every lesion will resolve in time.

But it does give us the opportunity to ask important questions that may influence that horseโ€™s future orthopaedic and athletic outcomesโ€ฆ

What exactly has been found on X-ray?
How significant is it?
How fast is the horse growing and what is its body condition?
What is it eating, how is it fed and, importantly, are nutrients balanced appropriately for the individual horse?

The developing joint is part of a living, adapting system.

Sometimes there may be more opportunity to support that system ๐™–๐™›๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง ๐™– ๐™ง๐™–๐™™๐™ž๐™ค๐™œ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฅ๐™๐™ž๐™˜ ๐™›๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™๐™–๐™จ ๐™—๐™š๐™š๐™ฃ ๐™ž๐™™๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™›๐™ž๐™š๐™™ than we might initially assume.

The diagnosis is important. And it gives us the opportunity to ask: โ€˜What can we influence from here?

These cases deserve to be approached comprehensively from multiple angles โ€” with the veterinarian, breeder, owner, nutritionist and other relevant professionals working together.
