Kids aged between 6 to 17 can learn the skating skills needed to play roller derby with age-appropriate contact and have lots of fun doing it all! WCJRD is run and coached by volunteer Roller Derby players, with a passion for skatey fun. We are not, however, affiliated with any other Roller Derby league. FAQ

below. DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SKATE? We require a basic level of skating skills to train with us. At a minimum, you should be able to skate in a controlled manner without holding on or needing assistance; coming to a safe stop, turning or changing directions is not essential, however, is preferred. Safety is always the main priority during training and games and unfortunately, we don’t have enough coaches to teach new skaters how to skate. Therefore, we recommend visiting your local roller rink for a few lessons or social skates to practice.
**Note: We are not a social skate club, we are solely for the purpose of roller derby****
PRIOR EXPERIENCE
You don’t need any previous experience playing Roller Derby, but you do need the enthusiasm to learn as well as the skating skills as mentioned above. EQUIPMENT
Roller Derby is a contact sport and we take safety very seriously. At a minimum, all of our skaters are required to have the following equipment:
Good quality quad skates. Cheap roller skates are not suitable for Derby. Skate helmet (not a bike helmet!)
Knee, elbow and wrist guards. Mouth guard. We can advise you on appropriate skates and derby gear. Second hand gear is often available for sale on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. Please send us a DM if you are interested in coming to see what we do and one of our friendly team will be ecstatic to help you and answer all of your questions!
