1er Régiment d'Artillerie de la Marine

1er Régiment d'Artillerie de la Marine We are a living history group based on the French artillery regiment at the time of Napoleon. We ar Our cannons fire blank charges but are potentially dangerous.

Members are expected to dress as French gunners, sailors, or officers of the regiment as they appeared in 1813. This need not be expensive as you can start with a simple greatcoat work up from there. We also represent gunners and explorers from the Lapérouse expedition (1788). For that reason we offer monthly drill days at a gun club in south-west Sydney.

We had a fantastic time supporting the FANS bi-lingual program at Killarney Heights.

We haven’t had a display there for a few years, so it was great to be back. We had very high levels of interest and engagement in our La Pérouse display. Looking forward to returning next year for the 20th anniversary of the French market at Killarney Heights Public School.

Reproduction shako cover. Napoleonic troops seldom had protection from the elements when on campaign. The preceeding bicorns were easily ruined by heavy rain so the shako came as a welcome change at first. The sides fold down to protect the back of the neck. The infantry would have their regiment number painted on the same place as our service insignia. Without the service insignia more people would have confused them with the Old Guard (which was another thing to be proud of).

"Napoleon's Marine Artillery: French Naval Gunners and the Campaign of 1813 - The Recollections of Jean Louis Rieu." An excellent account of the regiment. You can find it on Amazon and many other places.
