Ann Montgomery-The Mindful Rider

Ann Montgomery-The Mindful Rider I specialize in helping riders & horse owners create harmonious partnerships through communication. In 2004 I qualified as a Ride With Your Mind™ coach.

A fully qualified insured coach who is passionate about building the confidence, self-belief, suppleness and strength of both the horse and the rider. A forever student, who hopes never to stop learning, my search for knowledge has been as much about my own riding, as that of my students, so I have great empathy for mindful riders who are striving to be the best version of themselves that they can

be. This was the ignition of my passion and future, a wonderful day for me and a day to regret by my Dad
As I grew up I did not have the luxury of my own pony so I borrowed a friend’s pony while she was at boarding school. Only when I was 16 did I save up enough money to buy one of my own. By the time I was 23 years old I was married and my husband and I moved to South Africa. We bought a 20-acre property and this is where I first started coaching and running a Livery yard. In 1984 I returned to the UK to obtain my British Horse Society Horsemaster Certificate. In the years that I lived in South Africa, I coached lots of riders and had pupils competing successfully and being selected for the inter-region and inter-provincial teams. This was Hurricane, he started a massive change in my riding and knowledge. I competed successfully to Elementary-Medium on a number of horses of different breeds and types and became a South African National Equestrian Federation Level 1 Coach in 1992 and a Level 2 Coach in 1994. I owned and operated a riding school and 25-stable barn for a number of years in South Africa while I was studying for my SANEFF qualifications. In 2003 I was introduced to Mary Wanless’ work on the biomechanics of the rider. I felt that this was what was lacking in my coaching, so again I travelled back to the UK to work with Mary and do coaching courses using her methods. In 2004 the four of us (my husband and two sons) moved to Australia where I continued my riding and coaching. In 2005 my qualifications were recognised and I got my NCAS Level 2 General Coach accreditation. All my students are a delight to coach and I have had a number of children qualify for the WA Interschools teams, many of whom have travelled to the Eastern states for National Championships. I have been an official Dressage judge since 1996 and in 2007 I upgraded to a NOAS EA D Level Dressage Judge. In 2014, after 18 years, I decided to retire. This was not an easy decision, but increasing coaching commitments made me realise that this was where I was needed most. It’s where my true passion for helping horses and riders truly lies. Mindful of the need to remain abreast of emerging techniques, knowledge and skills, in 2009 and 2011 I travelled back to the UK to do an update on RWYM™ coaching. Ann teaching a student in Australia
Early in 2017, I upgraded to a RWYM™ Level 2 Mastery coach. As well as giving regular lessons, I also deliver RWYM™ clinics in Perth, regional WA, QLD, the NT and New Zealand. In 2012 I qualified as a Neuro-Linguistic Programmer and I am now able to incorporate this powerful skill into my coaching and clinics. I feel that NLP and RWYM have given me a unique ability and set of skills to assist the people I work with to achieve their goals and become the best that they can be. My horse Heidi who is the most generous mare is my dream horse. She has taught me less is more in my training and riding. Heidi continues to train me along with so many other horses and riders as we exchange thoughts, feelings and mutual knowledge.

I had the most incredible session with Kerry Thomas on Wednesday with Brea.

I had already booked this lesson ahead of the weekend clinic that I attended as a spectator, as I knew this direction of training and understanding truly aligns with my path.

During the session, we focused on connecting the subtle dots of information Kerry shared, along with some great discussions that blended my previous knowledge with Kerry depth of experience and insight.

There were some really powerful moments of awareness for both myself and Brea, which have already moved us forward in a very positive way in our training.

A heartfelt thank you to Kerry Thomas and Daphe for your openness, generosity, and beautiful energy.

And also a big thank you to Lush and Amy O'Neill for all the work you put in behind the scenes to make this trip happen so smoothly.

Join us for a weekend dedicated to developing clarity, awareness, and confidence in lateral work by deepening your understanding of both the rider’s influence and the horse’s readiness.
This clinic focuses on the basics done well - refining subtle aids, improving harmony, and creating movement that feels effortless for both horse and rider.

Here is your link to book. https://themindfulrider.com.au/margaret-river-feb

Day One – The Rider’s Role
Is dedicated to the rider's seat and its influence on lateral movement.
We will explore:
• Pelvic positioning and the role of the seat bones
• Alignment of the torso, head, thighs, and lower leg
• Understanding contact in lateral work
• How much the hand influences the movement versus how it guides, softens, and releases through the tongue and jaw
By developing awareness of these subtle cues, the rider learns how to set the horse up for success, allowing the movement to flow without bracing or resistance. The goal is to move with the horse, not against the natural rhythm of the gait.

Day Two – The Horse’s Perspective
We shift the focus to the horse’s understanding and physical capability.
We will cover:
• Which lateral movements is your horse ready for
• The criteria required before progressing to each exercise
• What each movement asks of the horse physically and mentally
• Individual assessment of each horse’s needs and training stage

This day is about learning to recognise readiness, improving clarity, and refining the details that make lateral work correct, balanced, and sustainable.
What’s Included Each Day
✔ Private 45-minute lesson
✔ Video feedback from selected parts of your lesson
✔ Workshop-style lecture with discussion and Q&A

Your investment: $260 for the weekend.

Don’t forget, if you are a Sound System of Training member, you get a 10% discount.
Limited to 8 Riders.

This clinic is ideal for riders wanting to build a deeper connection, clearer communication, and a more harmonious approach to lateral work, regardless of discipline.

A great conversation came up this morning in one of my private groups about what auditing is at my clinics and why not call it spectating or fence-sitting.

That's a brilliant question I thought, as often its called different things by clinicians and venues.

I call it Auditing and this is why.

There’s is a difference between auditing, fence sitting, and spectating, and it’s not about where you’re standing — it’s about how present you choose to be.

❇️ Auditing is watching with curiosity
Listening for the why, noticing patterns across different horses and riders, quietly asking yourself, “How does this apply to me and my horse?” It’s active, engaged, and surprisingly powerful.

Auditors are treated more like registered participants. They typically have access to clinic materials (like handouts), are sometimes allowed to sit in the main learning area, and may even be given limited opportunities to ask questions, though they do not take part in hands-on activities.

❇️ Spectating is watching with enjoyment.
You appreciate what you see, admire the skill, maybe feel inspired — learning happens, but more by chance than intent.

Spectators have limited interaction and access to materials. They usually observe from a designated area, often without the opportunity to ask questions or engage in discussions with the clinician or participants.

❇️ Fence sitting is being there without really being there.
Physically present, but mentally elsewhere. Opportunities pass by unnoticed, not because they weren’t offered, but because they weren’t taken.

Fence sitters may not have the same access privileges as paid auditors and may need to watch from a public area and will have no Interaction with the coach.

At clinics, so much of the gold is in the explanations, the shared struggles, the little moments of awareness that apply to all of us — not just the rider in the arena.

Two people can stand at the same fence.
One goes home with clarity and tools.
The other goes home saying, “That was nice to watch.”

Same clinic. Different choice of presence.

Last year I wrote a post wondering out loud whether I should learn to play the piano.

Well… I didn’t.
But then a beautiful free piano popped up on Marketplace, and somehow it arrived at my place last week. Funny how life answers questions you haven’t quite committed to yet 😉

I am now completely consumed.

I’m learning to play via YouTube, learning to read music, and learning to get my fingers to move independently to where they’re actually meant to go. And oh my goodness… it is so difficult. I have never played the piano or any other musical instrument or read music.

But the challenge is on. 🫣

Every time I walk past the piano, I play a little bit.
Then I walk away.
Then I come back and play a little bit more.
Then I try again. And again.

It doesn’t sound like music yet.

My fingers keep landing on the wrong keys, my brain feels overloaded, and everything has to happen painfully slowly. And yet the YouTube lady makes it sound so easy and goes too quick for me to follow at times.

But here’s the fascinating part — I know that every time I pause, think, slow it right down and try again, I am wrapping myelin around my nerves. The pathways are forming. And eventually, it will become quicker, smoother, easier.

And suddenly I realised…
This is exactly what riding is like.

When something feels difficult — for us or for our horse — it’s not about forcing it or pushing harder. It’s about pausing, thinking, and re-trying in slow motion.

It doesn’t look polished at first.
It doesn’t feel elegant.
But every correct, thoughtful repetition is wrapping myelin.
Did you know you can wrap myelin by imagining the movement too.

This applies just as much to our horses.

If a horse struggles in the halt and one hind leg slips out behind, we can rush on… or we can take it right back. Wait. Ask them to rebalance. Help them bring the leg underneath. Then walk on for a few strides and quietly repeat.

In doing so, you’re not just fixing a moment — you’re building their nervous system’s understanding of balance and comfort. You’re wrapping myelin in their body and brain.

And that’s where real, lasting change comes from.

So today’s little piece of food for thought is this:
If it feels slow, awkward or messy… you’re probably learning something important.
