"Polo In The Country will be played more or less to Jilly Cooper’s rule book, together with a hint of any current APF rules that our umpires happen to be reasonably familiar with, whilst we shall play with the country polo ethos in our hearts." 🙌🏽

Have fun, and for heaven’s sake look after each other, your supporters, and all the beautiful ponies. 🦄 We’ve a massive amount of drinks and food to enjoy amongst the jarrahs in the gentle company of our horses for the rest of the day, not to mention the whole competitive Perth season ahead of us, so let's have some FUN together this weekend! 💃🏿

Don't forget to bring swimming clothes for refreshment in the dam if you're so inclined, and your lucky red lippy, Beta.💄 If you feel compromised when packing your travel bags, we ask you to please just focus on making sure the wine gets in....

Safe travels, see you when you arrive for Polo In The Country this afternoon. We all can't wait.

Well good evening stalkers.

Country Polo Info - Thing #2 of 4

Emergency Stuff: Thirst Aid, Winebulance, Vet, Security, Police & Fire Brigade….🆘

(Just mentioning these items because a city person recently asked me, as they have done each year, “What will happen if *insert ridiculous polo scenario* happens out there?”) Firstly, we ARE the fire brigade, so relax! 😇 A couple of us might need to quickly change out of polo or ambo gear into fire retardant kit though, so give us a sec, but camp fires are prohibited anyway, so just don’t start them. 🙅🏻‍♀️ Reassuringly however, our polo-mad district fire Chief will likely be swanning around the pony lines necking cans, and we’ll also have a legit retired policewoman in da house with fluffy handcuffs at the ready, together with a fiercely protective squad of Life Members to patrol the boundary fence, so please rest assured that your campsite will be secure in every way, and our grounds a safe haven. 🏕 (However you probs shouldn't leave polo mallets unattended, those things have fkn legs.)

Secondly, how ridiculously HOT is the vet in this photo?! (Pretty sure our pet ferret just broke and my pussy😻 needs a check up!) Sadly though, Dr Evan won’t be in residence at Wandecla for our polo tournament 🎻, but we are SO incredibly blessed to have two excellent local veterinarians from Kojonup Vet Hospital committed to being on call to assist horsey shaped guests at our grounds throughout the weekend. (The contact number for the KVH on call vet/s is printed on the player invitation, and will be advertised in the draw and clubhouse.)

In the event of a player getting injured, with a preference for not-a-vet to treat them, that’s okay because we’ve also got an actual doctor (who we haven’t met yet but he sounds totes legit) playing for the Reid Cup this year, and a local St. John Ambulance crew coming out to watch over us and administer wine-to-mouth resuscitation (or whatever it is they actually do before kissing players better) from their schmick ambulance-come-hearse. Unfortunately, these kind volunteers will only be in attendance for the duration of the polo matches, and not later on during the parties, which is when we generally need them 🥳🕺🏼but we will have a couple of drunk nurses and retired surgeons, together with a few tradies and a butcher in residence at the grounds overnight, not to mention the doctor if he’s survived his polo match, and a couple of hot chicks who like to manufacture animal body bags and flog them to vets for a living, so that’s reassuring isn’t it. 😍

We are extremely fortunate that our local ambo volunteers are prepared to give up their time and stay off the grog for the best part of a weekend (and their millionth consecutive community event at that) in order for us to have a waahbulance present whilst we gallop and hoon 💨 around missing the polo ball, so please remember to personally offer a vote of thanks at some stage and invite them to stay at your beach house, city penthouse, yacht 🛥, Nan’s shed etc. free of charge. The Koji St. John’s crews are angels who serve our community so utterly selflessly, and don’t forget, out in the country, patients aren’t comfortingly anonymous; they are often friends or well known local identities, which makes it an especially challenging and confronting gig, and an entirely voluntary one. (AND the uniforms aren’t even that flattering.) 🙏🏽

When players “step off” in Kojonup, it’s usually pretty funny….except when it’s not. 😥 So, on the occasions when everybody swears quietly and nobody starts laughing, the general plan is that the ambulance either gets the injured player to the Kojonup District Hospital (where the doctors and nurses are extremely capable and totally gorgeous, but have limited diagnostic medical imaging equipment), or transfers them straight over to the better equipped Katanning Hospital 50 minutes away. (FANTASTIC bar just down the road from that one btw.) 🍸 For more dramatic cases, the airstrip in Koji allows for a slick getaway with the RFDS, whilst Wandecla offers a superb landing for rescue choppers🚁, and in the past….even a legless (no, really) St. Nick!🎅🏻✈️

Polo players please note that an actual **flight** to hospital is the only way of getting out of paying the customary fine of a carton, which is the standard penalty for players in breach of the Stepping Off Rule - that is, those who to announce their dismount. Theodore. 🐎 So if you don’t say it, just pay up and be bloody thankful you got away without serious injury. **Btw crutches, slings, fancy staples across your whole face, an eye patch, and moon boots don’t generally constitute “serious injury” and won’t see your fine waived, sorry. You’ll still owe for the worry you caused the rest of us. ###

If you’re at all concerned about how any of this “remote” country medical stuff works, just ask the "Captain’s Wife” Colin, or Zulu Base, or our former President Pete, who are quite the experts on all of it. 🙄 (That drive to Katanning I mentioned? Well, it can be done a tad quicker than 50 from the polo field tbh, as they well know.) 🏎 💨

Finally, Carlo, who runs the local liquor store with his lovely wife Julia, will be on standby to fix any alcohol related emergencies with a repeat prescription of thirst aid medicines. 🚑

Please just keep your beautiful ponies 🦄 safe and sound, don’t start fires or get injured, and it’ll be a really fun time for all of us….🤞🏽

Country Polo Info - Thing #1 of 4

The Actual Polo....🏇🏽

Players, please get hold of the P O L O book pictured below, and familiarise yourselves with the rules by enjoying some “revision”, noting as you do that one of our visiting players received a very special mention from Jilly Cooper in her personal credits within the book! 🤩

Theo and I issued a call to arms for affiliated player nominations and guest catering numbers via WAPA email last week, inviting peeps to nominate in desired pairs or as individuals, and provide some horse info for the Tournament Committee to consider whilst forming complete teams tomorrow. (As always, we’re running a day late with that due to a few minor “issues”, and as always, we’ll be totes open to bribes….🥂)

PITCountry will feature two grades, each handicapped according to whatever demographic naturally presents itself (most likely 2g ish and negative something), together with an educational and fun Hit & Giggle sesh for enthusiastic new players looking for a good time and a complimentary post ride refreshment.

A pleasing number of polo players and their lovers have managed to skive off work from Friday lunchtime onwards, in order to join us for a party bus 🚌 ride from Wandecla into town for a “Country Polo Launch” dinner function at our local distillery, which will naturally be followed by an after party and night cap back at the grounds, together with those who have chosen to stay behind to spend a peaceful evening relaxing beneath the jarrahs, sans loud party bus folk. 🌳

As we are hosting what is technically an official APF tournament (and we country folk are posher than you might think), full polo match regalia will be required for all souls on the field at Wandecla, for reasons of both safety and pride of presentation. (Though if you feel compromised when it comes to packing your travel bags, we ask you to please just focus on making sure the wine gets in - we can probably lend you the rest. Except whistles. Gross. Definitely bring a whistle, or you’ll be given one of these to umpire with: 🥳)

Whilst “casual fun” is our aim, the polo will run strictly to time, to relieve our legendary ambulance volunteers of their duties, and so as not to interfere with our important social plans.🕺🏼

“Polo In The Country will be played more or less to Jilly Cooper’s rule book, together with a hint of any current APF rules that our dodgy umpires happen to be familiar with, whilst we shall play with the country polo ethos in our hearts. Meanwhile, kind folk masquerading as duty desk officials will jot down potentially career altering data from the games as and when they remember to and can be bothered, with all players receiving a bespoke country polo souvenir prize to take home.” 🎁

(So it’s intended to be a lighthearted and fun weekend, yeah?!)✌🏽

Field side, visiting players and friends can look forward to mingling with our charming local supporters in the party tent (okay, so it’ll be more of a glorified gazebo tbh), whilst experiencing traditional country hospitality, featuring shaded grandstand seating, entertaining commentary and music, a visiting coffee van (thank God), and roaming ute with cool drinks, food and snacks.🧃🥪

As we shall be sportsmen in residence, requiring evening nourishment to heal and fuel our athletic forms 🤔, we have Mohana Catering👨🏻‍🍳 lined up to provide us with a substantial and nutritious home cooked meal on Saturday evening, so we don’t nearly die like a *some people* did last time. (If you see any of us riding and leading espresso martinis after bedtime this year, please direct us to our swags!🍸)

The local Pony Club will provide a lovely family barbecue 🍔 late luncheon during the Sunday afternoon presentations….which will naturally dissolve into a classic country sundowner to farewell our city guests, before the last of our local legends head home on about Wednesday….💪🏽

Should any “issues” arise pertaining to the integrity of the competition or whatevs, we’re fancy enough to have a highly understanding and sympathetic Disputes Committee who will be lurking beneath the jarrahs, though I encourage people with complaints about anything at all to please 🙏🏽 whinge directly to the Tournament Committee of me, Theo and Pete for us to help you in the first instance. (We shall be found cowering just behind Nino!) 🙃

As we’re essentially a social club with a polo habit, we’re keen for the games to be played with the Koji ethos at heart, i.e. there’ll be a strong emphasis on fun and fellowship, thus making our tournament an especially ideal platform for green horses, melodramatic older ones, occasional players, and those of us with limited talent 🙋🏻‍♀️ etc., whilst higher goal players looking for a fun time on their kickass weapons of choice will obviously also be accommodated.🦄

That said, because we all LOVE trophies, the Koji crew have The Wandecla Shield and Reid Cup on the table, together with an assortment of other prizes up for grabs, including for various individual awards. (See “open to bribes”, above….) 🏆

So that’s the polo element outlined for you.

Three more posts will follow, featuring other stuff that’s good to know, such as peaceful off site accommodation options for the (or maybe the sensible?!), together with details of our enchanting camping facilities and horse yards, essential thirst aid and medical info, Winebulance and veterinary provision, expected weather conditions, and entertainment happenings etc.🥁

In the meantime whilst you wait for Things #2, #3 and #4 to be posted over the next 24 hours, enjoy your Jilly Cooper rulebook “revision” everyone….😍

ZEB & Co. 👩🏻‍💻

P.S. Players, we’re guessing that Koji is going to be your first polo activity since all our registrations recently expired due to the not so new “timeframe” that we’re somehow still not used to, so if you haven’t already, you’ll need to fix up your APF membership online by Thursday 5pm at the latest please, or you will sadly not be eligible to be placed in a team, waah. 🎻 (It’s an insurance thing!)

Thanks to all those of you who have done this, and paid tournament fees etc. already. x

Thankfully, we’ll have VIP guest Megan Robinson to sober us up enough to actually play Polo In The Country this weekend!...

Thankfully, we’ll have VIP guest Megan Robinson to sober us up enough to actually play Polo In The Country this weekend! She’s mentioned “not knowing any rules of polo”, and so should fit right in with all of us, how cool! 😍

Her cute little coffee van Megacino’s will be nestled beneath the jarrahs at Wandecla, ready to bring us all to life on both days. ☕️

FYI the ambulance crews will be on standby just in case she fails, and appreciate gestures of refreshment greatly, so please offer to treat these local legends. 🧚🏽‍♀️

(The Captain also enjoys a sugar free strong flat white with maybe just a little chocolate on the side at pretty much any time! 😉🙋🏻‍♀️)

Thank you SO much for joining us Megan, we hear you make the best coffee in the district, and we’re very lucky to have you. Welcome to polo. 🙏🏽
