Good Evening all, its Player In Focus time !! Everybody meet our tireless Club Secretary Kerry Drennan... This man really does go above & beyond & we appreciate him every day 🍻🍻
1. How did you first get into lawn bowls, and what keeps you passionate about the sport?
Both my parents in-law played bowls, firstly at Harrisville and later at Mt Crosby when they moved to Ipswich. I had been a member of Boonah Golf Club, but only played once a year, and then badly. Upon my retirement, I needed to do something different and bowls was the choice because I knew of a couple of members of IBC.
2. What has been your proudest moment or achievement in lawn bowls so far?
I have three proud moments. The first was when I was chosen to represent the Club in Pennants, the second was winning the B Singles after having been beaten about three times for the A singles, and lastly being nominated as a Life Member.
3. What do you consider your greatest strength as a player?
I would like to think that I remain unemotional during a game and keep friendly with my own team as well as my opponents.
4. What’s your favourite thing about being part of this club?
I enjoy the friendliness and camaraderie from the other members. Talking to players with other clubs, this is not something that is always evident with them and their club.
5. What advice would you give to someone just starting their lawn bowls journey?
My advice would be to start playing earlier in life than age 60 and to play regularly.
6. What is your favourite game format?
My favourite format is pairs.
7. What’s your favourite shot to play?
My favourite position bowl is a forehand draw bowl. Upshots are history to me.
8. What’s the most memorable game you’ve ever played?
I think the most memorable game was when I played and won the B Singles. Previously, I had played the final in A Singles I think three times and the B singles at least twice. It felt so good to get over the line.
9. If you could bowl with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
I enjoy playing with any member, although nowadays they must skip. However, when I started, John Steed took me under his wing and encouraged and coached me and as he had been a champion in his younger days, his advice was always welcome. I was sorry when he ceased playing due to ill health.
10. What type and size bowl do you use?
My bowls are Aero F1 Turbo Pro, size 4H. I purchased them from Charlie McAnany and have never owned new bowls. Perhaps one day, I might lash out and append a few dollars on a new set.
