Me & the Nav have a Fishing Reel servicing business based in Forest Lake QLD, OZ. I post picture-stories on Instagram under the “thefishingreelfixer” banner. Some are simply about a reel that’s arrived on the bench & how she has come up during & after servicing. BUT I dont want to bore people to sleep / death, so I do get a bit loose with my commentary. Some stuff just isn’t true, but if you can’t pick the untrue - it probably doesn’t matter. WARNING stories contain NAVY jargon, Encyclopaedia Brittanikah Fishing Reel Technical Terminology (EBFRTT) & Frostly re-interpretation of real (v reel) words & vocabulary.
Thereelfix.au has been registered & a Webpage is either forthcoming or fifth coming !

Hi folks, not too good with this FB thing. Started this page on a whim without realising how much time it would take to keep it up - which obviously I haven’t. The business took off on a sharp upward trajectory. The DAIWA contract for QLD (Matt @ The Reel Shed) providing a huge workload & our reel fixing for the Gold Coast Fishing Tackle, and the Ipswich Charltons has also added to the workload. Now we are getting referral work from regular fishers and also from commercial fishers and charterers so are seriously looking at how we can bring on an extra technician.
I am in the process of understanding how Instagram works, so that I can publish pics & comments of reels under repair that I can refer the customer to. My intention is that this will inform the customer on the internal condition of the reel, and show particular parts that are broken, missing, or have environmental or reactive damage.
I will cease to comment on this page, except to occasionally update this post. Otherwise see me at Thefishingreelfixer on Instagram.

So Matt Shearer called me a Dork because I called the Daiwa Lever Drag a Daiwa Lever Drive - very rude!! I stripped out a beautiful old PENN GLS (pics below) for him, typically it needs new bearings - it still had the original bearings in it, a bit rusty and corroded but still turning. A really lovely piece of kit & will probably still be going when the owner is 6ft under.

INTERESTING what you pick up!
Started the day picking up my mate Peter. An interesting character and background - Army, Boxer, Trucky, & the rest I cant mention. He looked like he had gone ten rounds with Mr Tyson but it was cancer that did the damage. An hours run down to the Gold Coast - Biggera Waters to drop off a couple of reels & pick up a couple more. The Blacksheep is a bit of a toughy and gets some good press, but the level-wind never gets a rest so I suspect some bearings replaced and serious cleaning out is in store for it. A Daiwa Saltiga 4500 too, they are a Great reel and lovely to work on - they keep you on your toes though. And a tiny Shimano Fj 1000 Symetre, another superb piece of kit. As I take these apart I will post some before, during & after photos with comments.

FLOODED - The Home Workshop took on some water, listed to Port but survived. Although I mostly work out of the Ripley Workshop this one is fully geared up and functional. When we need to sacrifice an older reel for parts, I often do that here at night. Sad to see them sacrificed but we may be able to keep several others working by doing so.
