• VERDUN
The hills of Verdun are still dotted with craters and shattered forests—a silent testament to the horror that once unfolded there. In 1916, Verdun was the scene of one of the longest and most brutal battles of World War I. Over ten months, French and German soldiers fought fiercely for every inch of land. Men lived, suffered, and died in trenches that were mere yards from each other. By the end, nearly a million soldiers were dead or wounded, leaving behind a desolate landscape and the painful memories of sacrifice.
What makes Verdun so powerful for young people today isn’t just the sheer scale of destruction; it’s the humanity that endures through it. Letters written from the trenches reveal men who, though enemies by uniform, shared common fears, dreams, and desires for peace. Soldiers—barely older than many high school students—found themselves trapped in unimaginable conditions, yet many showed extraordinary resilience and compassion. They were willing to give everything to protect their homes and friends, and they bore witness to both the devastation and resilience of the human spirit.
Verdun reminds us of the cost of division, hatred, and unchecked nationalism. When people look at Verdun’s quiet hills and forests today, they are reminded of the dangers of losing sight of each other’s humanity. Understanding Verdun helps young people appreciate peace, recognize the dangers of war, and build a future where we work together to avoid such tragic conflicts. It’s not only about remembering those who sacrificed their lives but about using their experiences to foster a world where conflicts are resolved without violence. Verdun stands as a call to every generation: to remember, to honour, and to learn. So, important especially in times we do experience at present, where the world could be on the brink of another terrible world wide conflict.
You will arrive at Verdun around 11:00 AM. It is a 200 km trip. We will take you for a stroll through the inner City of Verdun and point out what there is to see.
Verdun is nestled in the northeastern region of France, characterized by rolling hills, lush forests, and serene rivers. The landscape offers a tranquil and scenic environment, especially in the spring and summer when the greenery is vibrant and the flowers are in bloom. The Verdun-Meuse River adds to the area's charm, providing picturesque views and peaceful spots for reflection. As mentioned we have been in Verdun several times and we will be able to point out the things to see.
Lunch 12:30 PM alongside the River Muse
Today you pay for your own lunch. Make sure you have 25 Euros on you. That will be efficient to buy food, drinks and little snacks. We will take you to the restaurants alongside the river where you can have your lunch.
After lunch the bus will take us to the battle fields around Verdun where we will guide you, so you see the most important parts of the excursion.
Ossuary of Douaumont will be the centre piece of the tour. The stark white stone building of the Douaumont Ossuary stands solemnly, housing the remains of 130,000 unknown soldiers. Rows of crosses in the military cemetery stretch into the distance, each marking a life lost. The architecture and rows of graves speak to the immensity of the loss, while the memorial remains a powerful tribute to both French and German soldiers who perished.
We will have a visit to the theatre to see a short documentary, and you will be taken to the top of the Ossuary’s tower from where you get a aerial view over the graveyards. Make sure you take some pictures and learn and take as much in from what an emotional visit into France will be. Write down your thoughts and feelings of what you have seen here. 7PM Diner - will be at Braunshausen

A powerful monument that brings alive the dramas and suffering of people that were totally b deprived of their Freedom and shows the island status Berlin being split in four sections had to endure after this postwar period.

• The beauty of Dresden is beyond question - and unmistakable! It captivates visitors at first sight, offering a captivating blend of romantic landscapes, baroque architecture, and one of Germany's most stunning historic city centres.
•
• During the final months of World War II, Dresden was the target of multiple major bombing raids conducted by Allied bombers from the British Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Force. Starting on the night of February 13, 1945, over 1,200 heavy bombers dropped close to 4,000 tons of high-explosive and incendiary bombs on the city across four back-to-back raids. The bombings resulted in an estimated 25,000 fatalities due to the initial attacks and subsequent firestorms. Additionally, more than 75,000 homes and significant landmarks of Baroque architecture were destroyed within the historic city centre.
• Between 1 pm and 2 pm, we will have Lunch in Dresden.
• Today, you pay for your lunch, allow 20 to $25 euros for food, drinks and snacks.
On our way back to Cottbus, we will visit the BASTEI. A destination with jaw-dropping views. This rock formation stands 636 feet above the Elbe River in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, southeast of Dresden.
What makes this majestic rock formation even more spectacular is a wooden bridge that connects several of these rocks together. Visitors have been walking across the bridge since it was constructed in 1824 (and replaced by a sandstone version in 1851).
From the 12th to the 15th century, a fortress known as the Felsenburg Neurathen stood by the rock formations. This fortress, however, was burned down by an opposing army in 1484 and there is little left of it to see.
