🔥The Game Has Outgrown Your Ego (And It’s Not Waiting for You to Catch Up)
Pickleball has changed.
No, let me correct that.
Pickleball has evolved so fast it’s basically a new species.
But some players?
They’re still walking around like the game owes them something because they were “pretty good back in the day.”
Back in the day was 2019.
Relax, Gandalf.
Nobody wants to say this out loud:
The game has passed your ego, your old habits, and your outdated assumptions.
If you don’t adapt, you will become the athletic equivalent of a flip phone.
Let’s get into it before you tell me, again, how you “used to dominate at 4.0.”
#1: Your Old Tricks Don’t Work Anymore
Remember when you could beat half your local park just by being consistent?
Yeah, those days are dead.
Gone.
Buried next to the Nike Monarchs you used to play in.
Today’s game has:
Faster hand battles
Heavier spin
Sharper speed ups
Smarter patterns
Younger athletes entering the sport
A million YouTube coaches training people not to fall for your old nonsense
If your strategy still begins with “let me just get it in,” you’re basically showing up to a gunfight with a pillow.
#2: You’re Not “Playing Smart.” You’re Playing Scared.
My favorite phrase from ego heavy players?
“I don’t go for that shot because I’m smart.”
No, you don’t go for it because your confidence is hiding under the bleachers drinking Capri Suns.
Pros aren’t reckless.
But they ARE assertive.
They don’t avoid attacking because they’re scared, they avoid attacking because it’s not the right ball.
Meanwhile you avoid attacking because you don’t trust yourself.
That’s not strategy.
That’s fear wearing a lab coat pretending to be science.
#3: Defense Isn’t a Personality Trait
“I’m more of a defensive player.”
Sure you are.
And I’m more of a “losing gracefully” type.
(Which is code for: I hate losing and will complain about it during the entire car ride home.)
Look, defense is great.
Resetting is great.
Soft play is great.
But if that’s ALL you do, you’re not defensive.
You’re submissive.
You’re hoping your opponent self destructs because you’re too scared to take control.
#4: Your Ego Is the Real Opponent
You know why you criticize faster players?
Ego.
You know why you say “they’re just bangers”?
Ego.
You know why you avoid learning new skills?
Ego.
You know why you lose to players you think you should beat?
Ego.
You’ve built your pickleball identity on who you USED to be instead of who you’re willing to become.
That’s why the game outgrows you:
You stop growing while everyone else keeps leveling up.
THE TAKEAWAY
The game doesn’t care about your ego.
It doesn’t care about your excuses, your nostalgia, or your “experience.”
It cares about:
Adaptation
Pattern recognition
Pressure creation
Better hands
Better decisions
Better conditioning
Better humility
When you stop assuming you know everything, the game opens up again.
You don’t need to be younger.
You don’t need to be faster.
You just need to get out of your own way.
The game has grown.
You can grow with it or you can stand still and watch everyone else pass you.
