Sydney Swans 1995* jumper #2 Dean McRae. This jumper is made by Sekem and is size 105cm.

Dean played 60 games for Sydney from 1993-1996 after being traded from North Melbourne.

As you would’ve read in my previous posts about 1995 Sydney jumpers, they are all rebadged 1994 jumpers. This is quite special in that I might have inadvertently picked up a jumper I’ve wanted for quite a while!

For the true diehard swans fans they would know that one of the clubs biggest cult figures (be it for only one year) Dermott Brereton wore number 2 in 1994. With suspensions (treading on Raydon Tallis head and karate chopping Tony Free) sidelining Dermie for much of 1994 this would have only been worn in a few games.

Who remembers Dermies epic speech after beating the dees at the MCG! One can only hope this jumper is from that game but I have been unable to photo match this jumper at the time of writing.

I am always looking for more Sydney jumpers so if you have one or know of anyone who does please get in touch.

Procrastination

The action of delaying or postponing something!

Finally after 620 days (almost as many days since Essendon last won a final) I’m back, and back with a bang!

Sydney Swans 2006 Grand Final MW and signed #9 Nick Malceski + runners up medal. This jumper is made by Puma and is size L.

The jumper itself has multiple stains and the watermarked Sydney logo. This was Nicks first year in the number 9 after previously wearing number 40 in 2005.

I remember this day quite clearly not just because of the result but because it was the last Grand Final day I worked! Listening to the first three quarters on the radio was tough, but going into the work canteen to watch the last quarter and getting ribbed by my workmates when we lost by one point is something I’ll never forget.

Nick had a relatively quiet grand final day gathering 10 disposals but he did manage to kick the last goal of the game to get us within 1 point.

Even though this was a sad day for all swans supporters I am absolutely stoked to have this jumper. It is one of a few Sydney jumpers I never ever thought I’d have in my collection.

I am still on the lookout for 1996, 2005, 2012 and 2022 Grand Final jumpers. If you have one of know someone who does then please get in touch.

Hobart Football Club 1986 or 1987 lace up jumper #6 Philip Midson. This jumper is made by premiership football jackets Adelaide. There is no size tag on this jumper so I am unsure on it’s exact size but it is rather small, particularly in length.

Lace up jumpers were worn in most competitions until around the end of 1987, but for what reason I have no idea. They were subsequently banned in most competitions to prevent injuries to players fingers from getting stuck in the jumper and or laces. Two of the last AFL players to wear lace ups were Ross Glendinning and Roger Merrett.

Up until recently I was unaware that lace up jumpers were worn in the TFL Statewide League, but I have since seen North Hobart, North Launceston and South Launceston versions along with the Hobart version I have here.

In the 1989 TFL Grand Final I have since noticed Wayne Fox is wearing a Hobart lace up jumper.

I am not sure if other clubs wore lace ups so if you have one from a club I haven’t mentioned or know if your club did or didn’t wear lace up jumpers I’d love to find out.

Hobarts sponsor on this jumper is Kwikasair express which was a logistics company founded in 1958. This sponsorship was obtained by the late John Upchurch who was a board member of the club during the 80s and also worked for Kwikasair during this time.

Philip played for Hobart from 1983-1989 with his last game the losing 1989 Grand Final v North Hobart. In all Philip played around 80 games for the Tigers. The jumper I have is number 6 but Philip ended his career wearing the number 23.

Philip’s 4 brothers also represented Hobart which is a pretty special feat in itself.

As you may have noticed I have chosen not to photograph this jumper on my mannequin so as not to have to undo the lacing.

If you have any TFL lace up jumpers gathering dust in your wardrobe please send me a PM.

Devonport Football Club jumpers 1989 #10 Anthony Bailey and 1993 jumper #10 Matthew Bailey. Anthony’s jumper is made by Sekem in acrylic material and is approx size 100cm. Matthews jumper is made by Royal* in acrylic material and is approx size 100cm.

Matthews jumper unfortunately has no neck tag but from looking at features of the jumper and the heavier material I have made an educated decision.

Anthony played for the blues in the TFL from 1987-1992 and was a very reliable medium sized defender! At the end of the 1992 season Anthony joined the struggling Sth Launceston bulldogs, a team with minimal success in its 7 years in the TFL.

1996 would be Anthony’s final season at Youngtown with the aforementioned reliable defender joining the team my mums side of the family parochially followed Sandy Bay.

1997 would be Anthony’s only year at Sandy Bay as it was also their final year in the TFL. As was the case with a majority of seagulls players Anthony would jump across to the newly formed Southern Cats for season 1998.

The cats would only survive until round 8 in 1999 which would also be Anthony’s last game in the then TSFL. He would see out the reminder of his career at Old Scholars club Hutchins winning multiple premierships. Anthony or “bails” is the favourite player of my auntie Pam and I’m not surprised as he was a great player and equally great person.

In regards to Anthony’s jumper I have narrowed it down due to some extensive detective work to the 1989 season.

Devonport had two different Mitsubishi logos between 1988 and 1992 with this version being the vinyl heat pressed square one. From 1991 the Mitsubishi logo was a sew on badge and a rectangular shape.

The DFC lettering on this jumper is vinyl, but I have also seen versions with sewn on DFC lettering.

In regards to Matthews career at Devonport all I know is he played in the number 10 in 1993. As you can see it has the updated Mitsubishi logo and the Cascade Boags League logo.

These jumpers fill two gaps in my TFL Statewide collection but I still need the original 1987 blues jumper (photo attached) to complete the set of Devonport jumpers until the 1996 season.

Sydney Swans 2021 MW and signed Pride jumper #8 James Rowbottom. This jumper is made by Nike in polyester material and is size M.

Well what can I say about this jumper other than it was bloody expensive! With most other clubs holding numerous jumper auctions, finally Sydney relented and held their first auction since pre season 2020.

This auction would garner huge interest, making this the highest priced Sydney auction for quite some time. In comparison the 2020 pride jumpers averaged out at $250 whilst most of the MW 2021 pride jumpers sold for $600+. No tins would be provided as all jumpers were sent in club branded boxes, which I assume was to cut down on costs.

Compared to last years ISC jumpers the Nike jumpers are considerably different, in both material and size. The material on the Nike jumpers has what’s like small perforations all over, something I’ve not seen on Sydney jumpers before.

The shape of the jumper is very straight with no real contouring. The area around the sleeves/back of the jumper is also different as the jumper to me looks quite wide around the shoulders when worn by the players.

This design is also vastly different to the 2020 pride jumper. Last year’s hoops style jumper replaced with a design containing a rainbow V. Which design do you prefer?

The last things I want to mention about this jumper is the unusual gps pocket which is stitched into the collar of the jumper and the thing I’m most happy about, that all logos and numbers are subliminated!

I have also been lucky enough to photo match this jumper even though it did come with a COA. Let me know your thoughts on my detective work!

If you broke the bank and managed to get yourself a pride jumper feel free to share your spoils in the comments.

Sydney Swans 2020 PI home jumper #23 Lance Franklin. This jumper is made by ISC in polyester material and is size 2XL. This is considerably larger than my 2014 GF jumper which is a size large long.

2020 was a year like no other for the AFL with the Covid 19 virus having a major impact on the season. Round 1 started on the 20th of March and by the Sunday the season had been postponed.

Matches would resume on the 11th June with the Grand Final being played at the later date of the 24th of October.

Lance would not play round one due to pre season knee surgery, but was expected to come back in to the side when the season recommenced in June. He would unfortunately suffer a hamstring injury that would force him to remain on the sidelines for the immediate future.

During lances rehab he would suffer from repeated groin soreness, with the club eventually putting a line through his season in mid August. This means for us collectors there will unfortunately be no MW 2020 Lance Franklin jumpers.

2020 would also mark the first year since 2005 that Sydney would have a completely different back sponsor with Real Estate.com.au replacing Citi/Citibank.

This would be the clubs last year with apparel supplier ISC. ISC was the clubs apparel partner from 2010-2020. From season 2021 onwards Nike would be the clubs new jumper producer.

With the Covid pandemic playing havoc with clubs bottom lines, teams would be looking at other revenue streams, this would include placing an additional heat pressed sponsors logo above the number and across the gps pouch.

Sydney would be one of a few clubs who wouldn’t add an additional sponsor and continue with the SMFC lettering above their numbers. Something I am pretty pleased about.

If you have any Swans PI or MW for sale please send me a message.

Sydney Swans 2003 MW heritage round jumper #2 Nick Davis. This jumper is made by Puma in polyester material and is size L.

In 2003 the AFL introduced heritage round, this gave clubs the opportunity to pay homage to their history by wearing specifically designed jumper from years gone by.

All teams bar Adelaide and West Coast participated in the first year of heritage round as those two clubs were relatively new to the AFL.

The first AFL heritage round was played on the 8th, 9th and 10th of August 2003 and Sydney chose to wear the iconic red V.

Clubs jumpers had a specifically designed heritage round logo, but something interesting to note is that some clubs had AFL heritage round on their jumper whilst others had AFL heritage weekend.

As I have mentioned previously this was Nick’s first year at the swans after crossing from Collingwood, in this particular game v Hawthorn he collected 14 disposals. The swans would go on to lose this game by 17 points.

I am still on the lookout for the 2005 heritage jumper so please send me a message if you have one and would be interested in selling.

Sydney Swans 2013 L/S player issue home jumper #2 Rhyce Shaw. This jumper is made by ISC in polyester material and is size S.

Rhyce was a noted wearer of long sleeve jumpers at both Collingwood and Sydney but unfortunately in his 7 years at the club 2013 was his worst year, playing only 6 games due to numerous injuries.

This is one of the smallest jumpers in my collection and the only year that Sydney jumpers feature the gold premiership logo. The gold premiership logo has been put on jumpers since the 2008 season which is in recognition of winning the previous year’s Grand Final.

Rhyce came to the swans in 2009 after 94 games at the Pies. His most memorable or should I say not most memorable moment occurred in the 2003 Grand Final, when running out of defence he slipped trying to evade Alastair Lynch which resulted in a goal to the lions.

Upon coming to the swans Rhyce began to play some of the best football of his career. This improvement culminated in Rhyce finishing second in both the 2009 and 2011 Bob Skilton Medal.

Rhyce was a member of the swans 2012 premiership side and was one of the swans best in the losing 2014 Grand Final. 2015 was Rhyces last season in the AFL, announcing his retirement after 237 games.

Sydney Swans 2011 player issue* clash jumper #8 Trent Dennis-Lane. This jumper is made by ISC in polyester material and is size M.

2011 was the first year Sydney wore a clash jumper, with the club previously only wearing a white based clash jumper in the pre season of 2010 in games against Carlton, St Kilda, Essendon and North Melbourne.

The design of the 2011 clash jumper resembles the jumper the club wore from 1987-1991 minus the red stripes on the sides. The club still uses this design, with only minor alterations made up until the end of the 2021 season.

I have labeled this jumper as player issue due to two factors, Trent only played 1 game wearing the clash jumper (against Brisbane rd12) and the 2011 MW clash jumpers (of which I’m assuming trents was part of) were auctioned off by the club fully team signed.

Trent played for Sydney for 3 years from 2010-2012 playing a total of 19 games. His best statistical game being the round 21 2010 game against the Western Bulldogs where he collected 15 disposals and kicked a team high 4 goals.

At the end of the 2012 season Trent was traded to the St Kilda football club where he played a further 10 games. He was unfortunately delisted at the end of the 2014 AFL season.

If anyone has the 2012 variant please send me a message. You will be able to differentiate a 2012 as it is the same as a 2011 but has a blue Citi logo on the back of the jumper.
