Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, stepdads, grandads and father figures out there — and a special shoutout to the footy dads raising little girls who love this game. 🏉💙

To the dads who get up early on a Sunday morning, pack the car, find the missing footy boot, drive hours for games and carnivals, stand on the sideline rain, hail or shine, and somehow become water runners, strappers, coaches, photographers and taxi drivers along the way 😂

To the dads who never told their daughters that footy was a boys’ game. Who bought her first pair of boots, taught her how to pass a footy, cheered just as loudly for her as they would a son and reminded her to get back up after every big hit.

Women’s rugby league is where it is today because generations of girls have had people behind them saying, “Go on then, have a crack.”

And somewhere out there today is a dad taking his little girl to footy who might one day watch her pull on a representative jersey, captain her club, travel the world with the game or inspire the next little girl coming through.

So from all of us at the Wide Bay Waves, thank you to the dads and father figures who keep showing up, driving the kilometres, standing on those sidelines and backing their girls. 🌊🏉

💙🌊 PLAYER REVEAL – EBONY WEBB 🌊💙

From Hervey Bay and proudly representing the Hervey Bay Seagulls, Ebony Webb completes our inaugural Wide Bay Waves squad as the team’s 2026 Captain.

Usually playing Lock, Ebony brings a physical style of footy, plenty of passion and a genuine love for rugby league and the people within it.

Having represented the Bundaberg Bears and Wide Bay Bulls, Ebony has experienced firsthand the talent that exists throughout regional Queensland and how important opportunities are for women who live outside the major rugby league centres.

For Ebony, the Wide Bay Waves is about exactly that — creating opportunities for regional and rural women to play, travel, grow and experience where rugby league can take them.

She’s especially passionate about supporting younger female players coming through the game and hopes the Waves can become another pathway that shows regional girls they don’t have to come from a major city to chase big opportunities.

After months of planning, fundraising and bringing together women from different communities, finally taking the field together in Hawaii will be a pretty special moment. 🌺

More than anything, Ebony is looking forward to playing alongside the women who have backed the vision and making some bloody good memories while representing regional Queensland overseas.

💙🌊 PLAYER REVEAL – SHEENA THOMPSON 🌊💙

From Eidsvold to Bundaberg, Sheena Thompson brings strength, determination and a genuine love for rugby league to the inaugural Wide Bay Waves squad.

Proudly representing her Wakka Wakka mob, Sheena currently plays for Western Suburbs Panthers Bundaberg. Unlike many players who grew up with a footy in their hands, Sheena’s rugby league journey only began at 25, when she played her first game in Eidsvold — and from there, she fell in love with the game.

For Sheena, pulling on the Waves jersey carries plenty of meaning. She’s proud to be part of the first Queensland team to compete at the Hawaii 9s, while also representing the regional and rural women who don’t always get the same opportunities.

Sheena hopes her journey can inspire the next generation of girls to back themselves:

“It means a lot to represent regional and rural female athletes and hopefully inspire other girls to believe in themselves — they can do anything.”

Heading to Hawaii, Sheena is most excited to compete, experience Hawaii alongside her teammates and make memories that will last well beyond the tournament. 🌺

From starting the game at 25 to now taking her footy internationally, Sheena’s journey is a reminder that there’s no single timeline for chasing an opportunity.

🏉 A huge thank you to Hervey Bay RSL! 🌺✈️

We’d like to sincerely thank Hervey Bay RSL for coming on board as a sponsor for our upcoming Hawaii International 9s campaign.

Their generous support is helping make this opportunity possible for Ebony, Kaycee and Akiza as we prepare to represent the Wide Bay Waves on the international stage this October.

Community support like this means so much to us. It not only helps ease the financial burden of competing overseas but also shows that local organisations believe in supporting grassroots women’s sport and providing opportunities for local athletes.

Introducing Shanaye Watson

The Wide Bay Waves are proud to welcome Shanaye Watson to our inaugural Hawaii 9s squad 🌺✈️

Joining us alongside her sister Chloe, Shanaye travels from Townsville representing Brothers Townsville and brings 10 years of rugby league experience as a strong forward/lock.

Shanaye’s journey began at 12 years old after Chloe was already playing and her team needed more girls — so Shanaye stepped up. What started as helping out became a pathway full of memories, achievements and growth.

One of Shanaye’s proudest moments was earning selection in the QAS rugby league program, proving where hard work and dedication can lead.

Her journey hasn’t been without challenges, after suffering an ACL injury in 2021 and facing the difficult road through rehab and rediscovering her love for the game. Her resilience and determination reflect exactly what the Waves stand for.

For Shanaye, representing regional athletes means inspiring the next generation and showing young women in her community that rugby league can take them anywhere.

Now, alongside her sister, she gets to be part of the very first Wide Bay Waves squad — creating history from the beginning.

Introducing Chloe Watson

The Wide Bay Waves are excited to welcome Chloe Watson to our inaugural Hawaii 9s squad 🌺✈️

Travelling from Townsville, Chloe joins us from Brothers Townsville, bringing 10 years of rugby league experience and plenty of passion through the middle as a lock/second rower.

Chloe’s rugby league journey started in the Under 12s at Upper Ross Rams after her best friend asked her to play — she said yes so her friend wasn’t the only girl in the team. What started as helping a mate quickly turned into a decade-long journey in the game.

Since then, Chloe has continued to grow as a player, with one of her proudest achievements being representing the Blackhawks Under 19s.

For Chloe, joining the Wide Bay Waves is about creating new connections, challenging herself, and being part of something bigger. She hopes to help bring more recognition and opportunities to regional and rural athletes, showing the talent that exists outside major cities.

As part of our inaugural squad, Chloe gets to help create history and build the foundations of what the Wide Bay Waves represents.

💙🌊 PLAYER REVEAL – VIVIARNNA 🌊💙

While based in NSW, Viviarnna has strong ties to regional rugby league and embodies exactly what the Wide Bay Waves stands for — creating opportunities for women from regional and rural communities.

Originally from Ballina on the NSW Mid North Coast, Viviarnna usually lines up at Prop or Lock and has been playing rugby league for almost 19 years. Proudly representing her Bundjalung, Dunghutti and Kamilaroi mob, she grew up in a rugby league family where her love for the game began as soon as she could run.

Viviarnna credits her mum as the biggest influence on her journey, describing the opportunity to play alongside her at her first Koori Knockout at just 15 years old as one of her favourite rugby league memories.

After overcoming a serious ankle injury that took almost two years to return from, Viviarnna has gone on to represent her culture and community while travelling internationally through rugby league. One of her proudest achievements was travelling to London to play the sport she loves, with Hawaii now becoming another exciting chapter in her journey.

For Viviarnna, representing regional and rural athletes means inspiring girls from small communities to believe in themselves and showing that opportunities can exist no matter where you come from. 🌺

Off the field, Viviarnna mentors First Nations people undertaking traineeships and apprenticeships while studying Community Services, Youth Services, Project Management and Leadership.

💙🌊 PLAYER REVEAL – AVA LEDERHOSE 🌊💙

From Bundaberg and proudly representing Waves Tigers, Ava Lederhose brings determination, humility and a genuine love of rugby league to the inaugural Wide Bay Waves squad.

Usually playing Ho**er, Ava has spent the last 9 years developing her game after first representing Bundaberg in the Under 12s. Growing up around rugby league, the game has always been a big part of her life.

Ava credits her parents as the biggest influence on her journey, supporting her through every opportunity and always being there when it mattered most.

One of Ava’s proudest rugby league moments came last season when her team completed an undefeated year and claimed the women’s premiership — an experience she describes as unforgettable.

When asked what representing regional and rural athletes means to her, Ava said:

“It means proving that players from these communities can succeed while inspiring younger kids to chase their goals.”

We’re proud to have Ava helping build the culture and legacy of the inaugural Wide Bay Waves squad as we head to Hawaii 🌺💙
