With this sport comes great expense and with sponsors like Beckie Kernich for Litchfield helping Jayden stay on the bike, we can’t thank her enough. She is family and community focused, we support what she stands for.
Hi everyone 👋
A few people were asking for a little bit more information about me on my last introduction post, so here you are, an introduction to me.
My name is Beckie, some call me Bec.
I have lived in the Litchfield Shire for over 30 years. During this time I have been involved across many areas of the local community.
I have raised three children as a single mum on a property just under 50 acres in size. I have experienced the changes in our rates and the services that we receive for those rates. I have also dealt with the extensive spread of invasive weeds across my property and the volume of work that has been required to try to control those weeds.
My children attended Berry Springs Primary School until they were home schooled. During the time they were at the school I had tenure as the School Council Chairperson, and I am proud to have instigated the building of the cyclone shelter at the school. I ran the School canteen and I also established the Childcare Program at the school. My business ran a before school, after school and Holiday Care program employing local people to staff the programs.
As part of the childcare program I registered our group to participate in Keep Australia Beautiful cleanups. This is something I am very passionate about, and I am seriously concerned about the rubbish that constantly litters our roads, reserves and crown land areas, with a lot of it heading into our waterways. I was so chuffed to see another landowner out cleaning up their road verge recently as I do it as often as I can, usually cleaning up the areas leading into Hardys Creek from cox peninsula and Mala Plains. A one man/woman army cannot do this alone so I would love to be able to tackle this better.
I was a volunteer with Berry Springs Volunteer Bushfire Brigade for just over ten years, receiving a service medal for my time there combined with my time as a volunteer with St John Ambulance.
For the past 11 years I have owned and operated Berry Springs Mechanical, providing local service to the community including 24 hour tilt tray servicing. I am very proud to have won an Australian Trades Small Business Champion award for automotive mechanical repairs in 2024. This followed winning Small Employer of the year with the 2023 NT Training Awards and the same award with Motor Trades Association.
Last year I started running free basic car workshops called Becs Basics, where I offer an hour a month to anyone (with a focus on women) that wants to learn some essential skills for looking after and maintaining their cars. Since taking over this business I have regularly hosted school students for hosted work experience placements, and some have taken on further paid work experience. Again, I feel it is important to employ local.
I have sponsored our local Litchfield Bears for the last seven years and it has been a pleasure to be involved in a small way around the club. Each year I donate money to the Starlight Foundation and Special Childrens Christmas Party. My mechanical passion has also lead me to sponsor Jaydon O’Connor in his motorbike riding endeavours and Rossi Johnson in his pursuit of success in the Toyota Series and now v8 Super Utes.
I am very passionate about our community and would like to be a community advocate for all locals. I am committed to supporting the people of Litchfield from a council level.
I will be popping up in the local area and look forward to talking with many more of you over the next few weeks about what I could do for our Shire.
Regards,
Beckie
Oh, I’m also a grandmother to four, attached picture is my oldest grandson and I.
