Barwon Golf Protect those valuable clubs, get organised and stop the rattle. Waterproof bag with 14 way organiser

It is great to have the new Smart Tri-colour bag in stock and to see the associated sales to appreciative buyers. I thought it would be good to show how I load up the bag - one of the many possibilities depending on your selection of clubs.
When you think how much time you can spend removing and replacing covers on all those valuable clubs, the addition of one or two covers is a breeze. You might be lucky and be able to avoid any covers at all. The final result - ORGANISED AND RATTLE FREE GOLF ON THE FAIRWAY.

Hints for speeding your (or your partner’s) game of golf.
Writing in The Golf Digest (October 2022) E. Michael Johnson admitted that he hated slow play. He wasn’t advocating “rushed play” but simply wanting to keep the game moving. Johnson listed his “7 sins of slow play”.

Starting with the last sin and working towards his first, Johnson listed issues such as working out your yardage and club selection while somebody else is having their turn, hitting a provisional when in doubt, being ready to move as the last player hits off the tee. He also asks players to limit practice swings and his first suggestion is to leave the driver cover in the car.

Johnson argues that the driver has a longer shaft so the head will not clash with other clubs so a cover is not required and valuable time will be saved taking off the cover for each drive and replacing it after the shot. No mention is made of other clubs in the bag and whether covers are being used for them.

I know when I received my fitted set of Ping G clubs, I had covers on every iron, hybrid, fairway and driver. There was now way they were going to rub and scratch other club faces or the graphite shafts on my driver and fairway club. I soon realised that the 14-way organiser on my Bennington bag allowed me to arrange my set to avoid rubbing with the exception of the driver and the fairway club. The result was that I only needed one cover to avoid contact with any of the set of Ping clubs.

Suddenly I became the first player in my group ready to play my shots and the first heading for the next tee. No longer was I taking off and replacing covers after each shot but I was also saving time retrieving the correct club thanks to the way clubs were organised in the bag.

Things got even better once we got our hands on the first prototype of the Linx Quiet Organiser Golf Cart Bag. Careful, placement of the clubs meant that I was then able to leave all covers off during a game of golf so even more time saving. Irons were arranged from longest to shortest so a quick selection always took place. Once again I was the first to complete my shot and be ready to move on. Another bonus was the ability to spot a empty wedge slot when the club had been left on the side of the green.

I fully concur with Johnson’s suggestion of saving time by removing the head cover but imagine just how much time can be saved by removing all, or nearly all, head covers in your bag. Add to this the ability to place your hand on the correct club and the time saved in retrieving and replacing clubs in your bag.

Square Strike 55 degree Wedge

A recent sale offer and discussion for the Square Strike Wedge on Facebook groups has prompted me to report my experiences using this wedge over the past three months. The sales description offered a wedge that: “is nearly impossible to hit fat”. This is followed by “No more chunked pitch and chip shots reduces wasted shots” (see Amazon).

Being a golfer who has wasted so many pitch and chip shots around the green, I was immediately tempted and soon became the owner of the Square Strike 55 degree Wedge. The wedge is offered in 45, 50 and 55 degree versions.

I did find quite quickly that the square face and bounce of the club certainly offered a more forgiving club which was much less inclined to dig in before the ball so that “fat” shots still sent the ball towards the hole. This was helped by the heavy weight of the club which took time to handle.

The big downside came when topping the ball where the extra weight could send the ball scuttling off the other side of the green and that was most shots at the very beginning of my adventure. I quickly took the club out of my bag and set up a backyard clinic. My initial result was that I was topping 8 out of 10 practice balls in the back yard, sending them shooting at top speed towards the metal fence with a large Crash!

To correct this I started focussing on a spot behind the ball, loosening my grip and letting the club do the work. This was a slow and very painful three month and approximately 1500 shot experience where I finally moved from an 80 percent fail rate to a 90 percent success rate. I moved from “near perfect” artificial grass to a close cropped mat and then over to the rubber on the back of the mat so that I would be ready to pitch on all surfaces.

The result is that the Square Strike Wedge is now my “go to” club when I am within 40 metres of the hole. My first goal was to just land the ball somewhere on the green (a big improvement for me). I am now working on doing better than that and, just occasionally, managing to sink the ball with one put.

Summing up, for me this was not an instant wonder. It might be for some golfers who might to be able to avoid consistently topping the ball. I suspect that the intense practice has also benefitted my pitching and chipping with other clubs.

Finally got my hands on our latest Linx Golf Cart Bag. I am still getting organised with rattle free club placement and with what goes in each pocket. Lots of opening and closing of zippers as I settle on the best layout. It looks like I can leave the cover off my Ping driver without fear of clubs touching. This will save time at the tees.

Golf and Sourdough Bread

The sourdough starter represents the underlying essence of the golf swing,
Built up over time with continuing care and improvement.
The variation of flours like the courses we play, some new and some familiar,
And the elements thrown at us: heat, cold, wet, dry, windy or calm - ever changing
The water, the agent that binds all the individual parts together.
The baking, the flashy bit, like the game, is the culmination of all that went before it.

Sourdough baking, best done on cold, wet and windy days.
Good days are for golf!
