“That’s all backed up by record growth in attendance, viewership and engagement.” — James Warburton

Yet none of that success is attributed to Neil Crompton. Warburton claims success, but his actions suggest the past was an abject failure.

What’s most appalling in this saga is the human element — the way Neil was treated.

The same individuals who spent decades building trust, respect, and even friendship stood back and abandoned him, while readily claiming his contribution and success as their own.

The members of the new commentary team were not part of those events, and I’m certain they recognise they’re walking on foundations built by others. They, too, are likely appalled — and perhaps now see the reality: that within Supercars, decency and respect are treated as transactional commodities.

That’s the leadership shaping the sport today.

‼️‼️UPDATE COMING‼️‼️

A formal release is on the way, and out of respect for the individuals involved I wont pretext it - but let’s stick to what’s publicly known.

👉There has been NO change in Supercars’ direction.

👉This was a unilateral decision by James Warburton.

👉Accountability sits squarely with him.

👉The push to “dumb down” commentary for the “casual viewer” was reportedly backed by a survey of just 400 people.

Crompo now joins Larko as part of the same pattern — driven by influential, money backed loud voices closely aligned to the series who’ve tried before to sideline technical credibility in favour of simplicity.

Apparently money talks louder than the backbone supporters:

⁉️23,000 backing Crompo.
⁉️30,000 backing Larko.

And louder than the people who actually understand the sport.

So ask yourself this:

Would a driver show raw, human emotion in an interview with someone they don’t respect?

With someone they see as a competitor?

With someone lacking authenticity from decades of being around the sport?

Someone who drives for a rival team or has ‘commercial link’ to a rival team?

Worse, someone who doesn’t even drive whatsoever?

❌❌No chance❌❌

That interview was THE interview of 2025 because trust and credibility were there.

People like Crompo, Larko and others from an era gone are seen as mentors and guidance figures, and therefor they bring out the HUMAN aspect.

Here’s the real risk Supercars should be thinking about:

Chasing the “casual viewer” doesn’t grow authenticity — it kills it.

And when authenticity disappears, so does the emotion that keeps fans invested.

That’s what’s truly at stake here.

AUTHENTICITY and CREDIBILITY of a commentary, RESPECT for individuals who possess those attributes, and the APPRECIATION for those pay to see it (the fan base).

‼️‼️ 23,000 vs 400‼️‼️

Supercars say the decision to clean-state the commentary team was based on “research showing declining satisfaction among non-core viewers.”

What they didn’t tell you?

That research involved approximately 400 people.

Four.Hundred.Non-core viewers⁉️

👉What is a ‘non-core’ viewer?
👉How were they identified?
👉What questions were asked?
👉What alternatives were considered?

We’re not told — and that matters, especially to the individuals Mr Warburton 🔪 in the back based on this ‘research.’

Here’s the now-admitted reality:

Mr Warburton takes the existing fan base for granted. So much so they openly admit “non-core” viewers are prioritised over the people who actually sustain the category.

🤷Do these viewers attend races?
🤷Buy memberships?
🤷Subscribe?
🤷Purchase merchandise?
🤷Provide reliable revenue?

We all know the answer.

It doesn’t take courage to make a bad decision — that’s easy. We see it every day.

What does take courage is making decisions that aren’t shaped by the loud voices of a few well-connected millionaires circling the category, and having the courage to go and speak with your consumers personally, not hide behind walls and proxies.

23,000 fan signatures had less influence than 400 non-core viewers in an anonymous survey.

Let.that.sink.in.

In an era where most people won’t even read past a reel — and are extremely cautious about sharing names and email addresses — nearly 23,000 people still signed a petition‼️

That’s not outrage culture. That’s commitment.

If that many are willing to put their name to it… imagine how many more feel the same and simply haven’t bothered to speak up.

Begs the question, what research do Supercars actually do or using to support these decisions? From my prospective, the only objective research to date has been these petitions 🤷‍♂️

🩸This isn’t a “refresh” — it’s a season-end purge🩸

Expert commentary is being stripped away under the tired myth that “dumbing it down” attracts new fans.

It hasn’t worked anywhere else.

The first attempt was Larko; swing and miss. On that occasion the individual pulling the strings was standing behind others.

Went away, learnt some new tricks and found new accomplices at broadcast partners, and has come back for a swing at Crompo (and others).

This time the decision has a name:

James Warburton at Supercars

If this gamble fails, accountability shouldn’t be optional.

At a bare minimum, fans now have a name for who is truely pulling the strings in all facets of the sport, and appears to have a level of control that means treating the greats of the sport with respect is optional.

Lastly, the fans reaction (approaching 23,000) isn’t about fear of change. Change is good, this type of change and its management is amateur hour.

Cynically, my guess is that Mr Warburton is waiting for Crompo to pick up an alternate offer, and then claim there was no opportunity to bring him back, thereby removing fingerprints from the knife, so to speak.
