WHEN YOUR BODY GETS STUCK IN FIGHT OR FLIGHT

Hyperarousal happens when your nervous system shifts into high alert and struggles to switch off again.

It can feel like anxiety, panic, irritability, restlessness, a racing heart, being unable to settle, or an overwhelming urge to escape.

When your body believes it needs to protect you, things like sleeping, concentrating, relaxing….and even digestion can become much harder.

This happened to me recently and my entire body went cold and I felt my blood pumping in my ears and my heart racing. It was scary.

One gentle way to support yourself is through GROUNDING.

Notice where your body feels physically supported: your feet against the floor, your back against a chair, or the weight of your body beneath you.

Rather than forcing yourself to “calm down”, simply notice the sensations and remind yourself: “I’m activated right now,
But I am SAFE.”

“I can stay with myself in the moment, while my nervous system begins to settle.”

With practice, grounding can become a familiar resource that helps you move towards your Window of Tolerance — where you feel safer, steadier and more able to cope. 🩷

MALE ROLE-MODELS:
This is a fabulous reflection written about our ‘Male Role-models’ - both for us personally growing up, and also for the young people of today who need to see them in their lives. Worth the read. It isn’t long but wow…it made me reflect. Most men are doing their absolute best; it is worth reflecting deeply on how you show up and how you are seen by others - not just in the big picture, but in the small moments when you think no one is paying attention. 🫶🏻

WEEKEND REFLECTION #47: THE MEN CHILDREN ARE WATCHING

A late Father’s Day reflection because I was busy enjoying the company of two of the good men I wanted to write about. A pretty fair excuse, I think.

Father’s Day can be complicated for some. Joy, grief, gratitude, disappointment. All of it can sit at the same table, occasionally passing the potatoes.

It has also made me think about the men who shape children’s lives. Not just fathers. There are men who show up in classrooms, kitchens, sports halls, waiting rooms and the general background of childhood. Some get cards. Some get a mug. Some get absolutely nothing except the knowledge that a child felt safer because they were there.

Children notice things.

They notice how a man behaves when he’s frustrated, especially when the printer stops working or somebody has used the last clean towel. They notice how he speaks to women when he thinks nobody important is listening. They notice whether he can apologise without adding the word “but” and then delivering a small legal defence.

They notice whether he can show affection without immediately making a joke to escape it. Whether he can hear no without turning it into a courtroom drama. Whether he asks for help or behaves as though needing anything from anyone is a personal insult.

They notice what happens when a man has power. Does he use it to make people feel safe, or smaller? Does he make room? Does he speak up when another man crosses a line, or does he suddenly become fascinated by a cloud?

There are a couple of men, strangers, on the edges of my life at the moment who are not being especially great. They’re close enough to be unsettling, but not close enough for me to want to give them a starring role in this post. I won’t turn it into a whole story here. It has simply made the good ones stand out more sharply.

The decent ones don’t need to dominate every room. They don’t confuse volume with wisdom or confidence with being correct about absolutely everything. They can be kind without making a documentary about it. They understand that strength is not the same thing as intimidation, and that being able to say “I was wrong” does not cause the sky to fall.

Boys need to see that masculinity can include tenderness, uncertainty, patience, a proper apology, changing your mind and asking for help. It can also include cleaning the kitchen without waiting for someone to notice and award you a medal, although apparently this remains a controversial position in some households.

Girls are watching too. They’re learning what respect feels like, what they should expect from men, and whether their voices are welcome or merely tolerated until somebody more important wants to speak.

I’ve been lucky to have good men and mentors in my life.

My dad is wise, funny, balanced and endlessly supportive. He’s someone I can turn to for a sensible view of the world, usually with enough humour to stop any of us taking ourselves too seriously. This is useful because families are very good at taking themselves too seriously.

My husband is creative, kind and supportive. He’s a wonderful dad, raising great kids at home and helping raise more of them in his classroom. He helps young people feel understood, discover what they can do and become a little more themselves, which is no small thing in a world that often seems determined to make every young person into an “influencer” lest you be deemed as failing at life.

Some of the men who influence children were never parents at all. They are the people who offer encouragement, perspective, patience or a safe place to land for a while. Sometimes they say exactly the right thing. Sometimes they just keep showing up, which may be less glamorous but is generally more useful.

Some men grow up with wonderful examples. Others have to build their idea of manhood from the scraps of what they wished they’d received. I have enormous respect for the men who recognise a harmful pattern and decide it ends with them. That kind of change is rarely dramatic. It is usually made up of small choices, repeated until they become a different inheritance.

So today I’m grateful for my dad, for my husband and for the good men quietly showing children what masculinity can look like.

They may never call themselves role models.

Children are taking notes anyway.

Here’s the card I bought for my Dad, i think it looks a bit like us. And after making sure the kids didn’t forget their dad today, in perfect irony, I of course left it on the kitchen bench. Oh well an excuse to celebrate Father’s Day 2.0 soon

ARE YOU CHOOSING THE ‘SAME PERSON’ BUT IN A DIFFERENT BODY EACH TIME ?

Sometimes what feels like incredible chemistry isn’t necessarily a sign that someone is right for us. 🫣

It may be familiarity.

Our early relationships can help shape what our minds, and our nervous systems come to recognise as connection, safety and love. It is what we know.

If love once came with inconsistency, chasing approval, keeping the peace, rescuing others or wondering where you stood, those patterns can feel strangely familiar later — not only in romantic relationships, but in friendships too.

That doesn’t mean you are deliberately choosing unhealthy relationships, or that all attraction is simply an old pattern….
But it can be worth becoming curious about the relationships that repeatedly pull you in. Is the “spark” actually excitement and genuine connection; or does part of it come from anxiety, uncertainty, proving your worth, being needed or waiting for someone to choose you?

Sometimes calm, consistent relationships can initially feel unfamiliar or even a little “boring” when your nervous system has become accustomed to unpredictability.

Breaking these patterns isn’t simply about finding a different person.
It can involve gently questioning what you once learned to call love and creating a new definition: consistency instead of confusion, reciprocity instead of chasing, boundaries instead of self-abandonment, and peace instead of constantly having to prove your place.

You can learn that peace is safe. Consistency can still have chemistry. And chaos does not have to mean love. 🩷

WELLBEING VALUES — WHAT CAN’T BE COMPROMISED? 💚

Find somewhere quiet, settle into a sense of calm and take a few grounding breaths.

This Sunday’s deep dive is about WELLBEING VALUES — the things that support your body, mind and soul to feel healthy, regulated, safe and secure, while helping you stay connected to yourself and your needs.

Look through the tile (or research some more on your own) and write down ALL the values that stand out to you….without judgement and without choosing what you think you ‘should’ value.

Then circle the ones that carry the most meaning. Narrow those down to your Top 10, then your Top 5, and finally prioritise those five from 1–5. Your No. 1 becomes your NON-NEGOTIABLE CORE WELLBEING VALUE — the thing you most need to honour to support your wellbeing.

My suggestion is for you to write the whole process in a journal and keep it somewhere safe.

❣️Your other choices still matter….

You are simply identifying the value sitting at the very centre of all of the others.

I f you are having troubling pinning things down….Ask yourself:

*When I’m living well and feeling most like myself, what needs to be present? *

*What helps me return to balance? *

*What supports me to feel safe, grounded and authentic? *

*What becomes noticeably difficult when this value is repeatedly compromised?

Each Sunday, we’ll find some quiet time and explore another area of our values. Over time, your No. 1 choices will begin creating a personal road map — your CORE LIFE VALUES — that you can return to when making decisions, setting boundaries, overthinking, feeling under pressure or standing at one of life’s inevitable crossroads.

🧭 Your internal COMPASS 🧭

So… what is your #1 NON-NEGOTIABLE ‘Wellbeing’ Core Value?

YOUR INNER VOICE CAN BE EXHAUSTING

When we’re constantly tired, it can be tempting to think we simply need more rest, better sleep, meditation, breathwork or another nervous system regulation strategy. These practices can absolutely be supportive and can make a difference to our days….but sometimes there is something deeper quietly draining our energy: the way we speak to ourselves all day long.

An inner voice filled with;
“I’m not good enough”,
“I should be coping better”,
“I’m failing”,
“I have to keep everyone happy” or
“I should be doing more”
….can keep our mind and nervous system working overtime.

Rather than trying to silence that voice, we can become curious about where it came from….

Perhaps from old beliefs, past experiences, unmet needs, fear, conditioning, or perhaps wounds that still need compassion and understanding.

Changing our relationship with our inner voice takes time.

It begins with awareness, curiosity and self-compassion - noticing the thought, questioning whether it is actually true, and practising a kinder and more supportive response.

Sometimes the most powerful question is simply: “Would I speak to someone I love the way I’m speaking to myself?” 🩷

THEY SAID SHE CHANGED… SHE DID.

They said she had changed - as though becoming different meant she had disappointed them.

…..But the truth was,
She GREW.
She LEARNED.
She EVOLVED.
She HEALED.

She began understanding her own needs, trusting what felt right at her core and recognising where boundaries were needed.

She stopped allowing other people’s behaviour to determine how she saw herself.

She stopped settling for scraps and sitting at tables where who she truly was wasn’t valued.

She chose herself as a priority. Not because she stopped caring about others, but because she finally understood that she mattered too.

She began expecting respect, dignity, honesty and reciprocity in her relationships — whether with family, friends, colleagues, workplaces, communities, religious groups or organisations.

And when something felt wrong, she gave herself permission to listen to that feeling, seek support, gather new information and question what she had previously been taught to tolerate.

Sometimes the change other people struggle with most is the change that sets you free.

Finding your way back to your authentic self isn’t selfish. It is self-compassion. It is self-respect. It is taking your power back and deciding what you are — and are no longer — prepared to accept. And perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves in this lifetime is the courage to become more fully who we were always meant to be. 🩷

With love,
Caroline

🧡 WORK VALUES —
WHAT MATTERS BEYOND THE JOB TITLE?

Find somewhere quiet, settle into a sense of calm and take a few grounding breaths.

Look through today’s WORK Values and choose ALL of those that stand out to you — whether that’s purpose, flexibility, security, creativity, connection, independence or something else.

These may relate to paid work, volunteering, caring, study or other ways you contribute.

There’s no judgement and no choosing what you think you ‘should’ value. Please don’t spend any time even ‘thinking’ about your answers. This exercise works best from instinct and not over thinking it. That is why you are writing down everything that calls to you.

Narrow your choices to your Top 5, prioritise them….
Then identify the ONE Work Value that feels NON-NEGOTIABLE for you.

Now reflect on your No. 1 value in your current or previous working or volunteering life:

❤️ How does this value already show up for you?

💚 Are your decisions aligned with it, or have you gone a little off course?

🧡 Does your workplace or organisation respect and embrace something so important to you?

💛 Are you consciously using this value to guide where you put your time, energy and skills?

Looking at work through the lens of your values can help clarify why something feels right — or deeply wrong.

Keep your No. 1 choice with the others from our Sunday series. Together, your non-negotiables will help identify your CORE LIFE VALUES — these are your personal compass for decisions, opportunities, boundaries, change, burnout and crossroads.

🧭 Are you currently living in alignment with your most important Work Value?

I’d love to hear your reflections if you feel comfortable sharing. Follow my page to continue the Core Values journey with me. 🌈
