Is it just me, or are we currently going through a mental health crisis, where increased mental load, expectations and isolation is bringing many over the edge where they can cope? And isn't it time we do something about it, coming together as a community, and find modalities such as breathwork and somatic practices, to come back to what we are meant to be as humans?
For years, whenever stress hit or burnout knocked on the door, the standard advice was to try harder, go for a massage or perhaps see a therapist. Adjusting diet and perhaps attend a weekly yoga class. But is that enough?
Some of us discovered breathwork. It became quite trendy, especially intense, activating breathwork. Although, the truth is that high-intensity breathwork, similar to high intensity workouts, aren't great for overrun, cortisol-ridden, dysregulated nervous systems.
When I started navigating my own journey: recovering from intense burnout, adjusting to a late neurodiversity diagnosis (ADHD & autism), and learning how to truly hold space for myself, I realized that healing doesn't happen when we force the body. It happens when the body feels safe.
That is why I fell in love with Nalu Breathworkยฎ. ๐โจ
Rooted in ancient Hawaiian wisdom ("Nalu" reflects the gentle, rhythmic flow of ocean waves), this practice isn't about hyperventilating or chasing an intense cathartic high. It combines conscious circular wave breathing with the traditional Hawaiian "Ha Breath" (the Breath of Life) to gently activate the vagus nerve, lower cortisol, and bring the nervous system back into deep parasympathetic balance.
Nalu Breathwork is gentle, itโs trauma-informed, and it gives your body total agency to process trapped stress at its own natural pace.
Because of this grounded approach, we are seeing a massive shift across Australia. Nalu Breathwork is rapidly becoming a go-to somatic tool not just for yoga teachers and massage therapists, but also for mental health professionals, social workers, school educators, and medical practitioners looking for safe, evidence-informed ways to help clients self-regulate.
Iโd love to hear from this community:
๐ Have you ever tried breathwork before? Was it a gentle, grounding experience, or did it push you straight into fight-or-flight?
๐ If youโre a practitioner or educator, how are you currently bringing nervous system regulation into your work?
Drop your thoughts or experiences belowโletโs talk about what safe, somatic healing actually looks like! ๐
