Competitive football was my life for 35 years and I genuinely thought walking away would be difficult.
When you’re inside a team, it takes over your thinking, your conversations, your time and your focus
Life literally revolves around the fixture list, pre season in November and seasons ending in September. my first year of retirement I promised to do the things I wanted to do but football had meant we missed. Australian open with my wife, Grand Prix, family Winter holiday to the sun.
when you step away, you realise just how much of your life it consumed…
Looking back, I think I had already started to realise in my last season or two i had greater interests away from playing football.
I was finding far more fulfilment in my family, businesses and other opportunities away from football.
I loved every moment of playing but I think I had grown beyond the ceiling of what it could give me, It was a massive part of my life and helped shape who I am but eventually, you realise there is more to life.
Football has given me amazing memories and friendships and I hope it does the same for every young player we help!
